T21 : Stuck on splash screen

#1 Post by clickpoint » Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:55 pm

The scoop :
T21 ; 4AU model
With memory only goes to splash screen and nothing more..
No beeps at all. No HD / CDROM / minipci card
W/ and W/O battery...
Can only turn on and turn off!
Have tried different keyboards, different memory in different slots
different processors............. NADA

Is the motherboard toast??

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Maybe not toast just yet...

Try this: With your left hand, grab the front left corner of the system, fingers underneath, thumb on top and apply slight upward pressure with your fingers and downward pressure with your thumb (i.e., like you are trying to snap off the corner from the rest of the system). Does that allow the system to boot/POST? If not, try the opposite actions; fingers on top, thumb underneath, lift front left corner relative to the rest of the base. If either one of those actions permit the system to boot then I'd say you have a component that has come loose from the motherboard.

Also try pressing the spacebar while on the splash screen. I have heard that this may get stubborn thinkpads to POST. Also POST does take significantly longer without a hard drive installed.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I just let the machine sit for 5+ minutes, and still nothing.
I tried bending at the L corner nothing
Tried space bar , nothing.
OH WELL--- must be junk!!!

SO I started to take it apart... first removed the CMOS battery...
What would happen if I replace this?? What's another 5 minutes?

It posted! Powered up and down several times without issues.

Does that make sense???

Now the question is will it still work tomorrow????

No, not really, but that doesn't mean it wasn't your problem. There have been strange things that happen when the CMOS battery is "not quite dead". Can you measure the voltage on the old battery?
