ALERT: Change in restore disk policy

#1 Post by fritz_the_blank » Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:32 am

I received my new T42 on Thursday. I called IBM tech support to request the restore disks, and they informed me that I would have to pay $40 for them. I explained to the representative that I paid over $2500 for the laptop and that they should be ashamed to shake me down for the extra money for something that they should have included in the first place!!!

My pleas fell on deaf ears....

Mine came in on Wednesday and I burned up a copy of the restore disk and a slipstreamed XP SP2 install disk from my i386 folder. What's the difference in the one IBM sends and what the IBM utility will burn for you?

There is an option to create your own restore disks--it takes 7 CD-Rs and about an hour of your time. I am just dissapointed that with what this machine costs, they should supply the disks for the software that you paid for.

The T42 has the ability to make its own recovery CDs, that's why they're loath to send them to you.

All I know for certain is that if you go to your programs under the start menu, there should be an Access IBM directory. One of the options there is to create recovery disks. Tech support tells me that those will create the exact disks that IBM used to send for free.

For sp2 discs, you can go to www.microsoft.com website apply free sp2 disc. they will send you the disc in 5 days after you finished the application

so asking for xp sp2 on cd will get me a recovery cd that i can use to install windows fresh if i need to or is it simply an sp2 patch cd after i already have a working windows cd? i want a xp cd that i'd get if i purchased a copy of windows to be able to restore a computer instead of just using ibm's modified oem version.

Hey ronan, do you think you can be a little more specific on the link? I did a search on the website, and can't really find the right place to apply for SP2.

Thanks! :D

he meant to request SP2 disks (as opposed to downloading it from windows update). if you go to windows, sp2, how to get the upgrade, you can request the disks. however, i don't think this will help anyone out b/c i believe they are just a cd with the sp2 upgrade file on it not a recovery or windows software.

To make a Windows XP Pro SP2 CD (full installation, not just the patch), go search for "Autostreamer". It's a good utility that makes an ISO image of a slipstreamed CD. All you need to tell it to do is to specify your Windows installation souce (I believe it's C:\IBMTOOLS\I386) and the SP2 file (can be downloaded from Microsoft or ordered on a CD for free). Then use the RecordNow! utility that came with the ThinkPad to burn that ISO image to a CD. Voila!
