Error 1606 on my X31 help please

#1 Post by spectre » Wed Jun 27, 2007 9:24 pm

Hey Y'all,

I have an X31 (SP1) with XP pro and Office 2003.

I noticed that half of my Office 2003 is missing and when I try to fix the problem, uninstall Office to re-install or recover it gives me an error 1606 and halts whatever I was doing.

I NEED office on this computer

Anyone have an idea on where to start?

Google.

Try "office 1606 error" and you should get several hits. This is from the "horse's mouth" (i.e., Microsoft):

I would first try Windows XP restore located in Accessories/Tools.

If that does not work (restoring to your last known good point), then you could try editing your registry. Good luck...this can be tricky.

If that fails, then it may be time to reinstall your entire system including Windows XP and Office 2003. Hopefully you have the recovery disks or access to a copy of Windows XP. All the necessary drivers are located on the IBM/Lenovo site and will self-install. But that is another story.

I assume you have not backed up your hard drive and the worst has happened. Take your time...but think in these steps before you reinstall Windows XP.

Nope, I have no recovery discs and the restore did not work either...

Did you check the registry values described in the Microsoft KB article that Ray pointed out?

I did, and I thought I added the missing one... I will have more time tonight to dive into it...

Got it fixed...

Nothing that Microsoft had to fix it worked... and even after I updated the values I had no joy with the system.

I found a tibs.5.bl file / deleted it and now my system works like a champ.

What was odd was that only Word, Access and Excel did not work...all of the other Office 2003 pro worked just fine.

Thanks for the help Y'all
