no boot floppy/cd/harddisk

#1 Post by u.mac » Thu Jun 28, 2007 6:08 am

tp600 (2645-210), latest bios, 32mb + ext. 64mb... unused for 2 years... cmos-battery empty... dead accu, virgin (never screwed)

insert new accu, new cmos-battery... easy bios works fine, all selftests ok, but uuid was empty. ctrl-g generates new id, saved - now ok.

but... tp600 don't boot from any device. disconnected hd+cd-rom, ext. memory - only external floppy connected, bios=boot from floppy only

with no floppy in drive:
thinkpad-screen (ok)
short beep (ok)
f1-screen (ok)
pressing f1...

with empty, fresh formated floppy in drive:
thinkpad-screen (ok)
short beep (ok)
"I9990305" ...unbootable medium (ok)

with bootable floppy inserted:
thinkpad-screen (ok)
short beep (ok)
floppy activity-lamp lit
long(?) beep (sounds near ring of telephon)
darkgrey, blinking cursor near middle of screen
system hanging - only reset works

external floppydrive + floppy works fine with tp600x

bios: boot from hd only...
disconnect floppy, connect harddisk with win98...
thinkpad-screen (ok)
short beep (ok)
hd activity-lamp lit
long(?) beep (sounds near ring of telephon)
darkgrey, blinking cursor near middle of screen
system hanging - only reset works

hd ist accessable in other systems

all test with onboard memory only and all test with deactived internal memory with ext. 64mb... same procedure

need help

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

People ARE out here... it just might take some time for somebody to come by with the exact answer to solve your problem. I don't have any 600 systems (just 600E and 600X) but I have not seen this type of problem before.

When you say that "only reset works", is this the "hidden" switch next to the power slide switch?

Has the CPU been upgraded? If so, try Fn+F2 when the system is hung. I understand that key sequence may allow the system to continue booting.

yes. system hangs completely, power off doesn't work (in this time).

the forum ignores the most stable tp with best design?

i bought my tp600 new, maybe 1998 or 1999. case was never open (virgin  )

fn+f2 just entered... nothing appears. system hungs.

i've also tested pcmcia-adaptec-scsi-adapter - but card has no bios, scsi-devices not bootable

i'm thinking, the bios may be defect, because cmos-battery went empty or some hardware like dma-controller. but before sleeping for 2 years all components works fine. in bios all systemschecks are fine.

witch other medium is bootable in tp600?

Accu would be the main battery.

You wrote that power off doesn't work. Does it work if you hold it pressed for 5 to 10 seconds?

You should look at the hardware maintenance manual, but I fear that it will tell you to replace the system board. Fortunately the 600 is pretty old so you should be able to get just a system board, or a parts machine that has a working one.
