Printing via my network

#1 Post by Truthfinder » Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:16 pm

Can anyone give me advise on getting my T60 to print over my wireless network.

I have a PC in my office that is connected to my Canon printer.

I would like to be able to print using my ThinkPad which I use from out in my den.

My PC is connected to my Comcast modem and my Linksys Wireless Router.

I set printer sharing up on both the PC and the ThinkPad, but still not able to print from the ThinkPad. I also installed the Canon Printer drivers on my ThinkPad, however, still not able to print.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Oh, I am running N.I.S. if that maters.

Thanks one and all...................

The easiest solution would be to get a PrintServer. Such a unit is either integrated in a router, or when bought separately, plugged into the router. It is always available to all users of that network, and no other PC(s) need to be switched on.
These printservers come in either USB, Parallel or a combination of both, and they can also be wireless.

OK, so here is what you should need to do:

1. Share the printer from your PC (no printer sharing needed on ThinkPad)
2. Browse to your PC from your ThinkPad, and connect to the printer
3. Windows automatically loads the drivers on the ThinkPad, and you are ready to print (aka point-and-print)

Now, it looks like you have done a lot more. So ...

- Can the ThinkPad and PC talk to each other? Can you go to a command line on the thinkpad and ping the IP address of the PC? What about pinging the name of the PC?

- Assuming that works, open Explorer, and type in \\nameofyourpc in the address bar, and hit Enter

My guess is that one of those two steps is failing. If you can report back on the results, I can suggest additional troubleshooting steps.

Try disabling NIS temporarily. if that works go into settings and add the computer that has the printer attached to the trusted list

First off, if you are using Windows XP (or Vista) on the host computer, you need to run the Home Network Wizard first, which can be found in the control panel. Follow the steps given to set up the network for that computer. A reboot may be required. Once you have done that, go to the printer folder. right click on the printer you want to share and click sharing. Set the settings. Now make sure that any software firewalls are configured properly for your network. You can find out what IP addresses and IP address rages you need to set for your router's firmware setup page.

Next, you must also do the network setup wizard on your thinkpad (this assumes you are running Windows XP. If you are running Vista, procedures are somewhat the same.) Once complete, open My Network Places, click on view workgroup computers on the left side window menu. Now you should see an icon for every computer on your network. Open the computer that has the shared printer and then double click on the printer icon. Windows will set up the printer automatically.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

tom009 is pretty much right on, as long as your canon printer is connected via a wire i.e. USB or parallel cable to the PC, just share out the print driver on the pc it is connected to. From your thinkpad, use the add printer wizard and check the circle "network printer' not local, browse to the pc the canon is connected to and you should see the canon printer there, highlight it and follow the rest of the wizard. IF your thinkpad won't Find the printer when you select browse for printers type in the name of your PC with the printer attached and the name of the printer i.e. YOURCOMPUTER\canon in the box. This is all dependent of course if your two computers are talking to each other with no problems, if you have a problem there try turning off all firewalls, make sure you can see any shared folders then run the add print wizard again. Complete the process then turn the firewalls back on.

Delete the printer you have already installed in your thinkpad or else if you want to use that driver use the exact same Port that is listed in the PORT tab of the PC with the canon printer attached.
