2.55 lbs in spite of the SSD. And $3500 ...

(Not to mention small SSD capacity, small memory capacity and lack of ... yes, the TouchPoint!)

I finally had a chance to play with one today, at the new Best Buy store near Lincoln Center in New York City. I fell in love with it instantly! It's probably the most ideal ultraportable laptop I've ever touched, far better than the X-series Thinkpads (which weighs the same but has a much lower resolution and no internal optical drive) and even better than Sony's own TX series. It looks very sexy, and feels quite solid. Not as solid as the X series or the HP nc2400 that I have, but solid enough. The keyboard keys resemble the MacBook's, which I am not used to and so it didn't feel very comfortable. Nevertheless, I could still type pretty fast on it. The 1366x768 resolution gives 2.45% more pixels than the much more common 1280x800, and 33.4% more than 1024x768.

I will probably be able to afford one in 2012 when it's five years old....

CORRECTION: The low-end models of the TZ series are actually not too pricey, e.g. Newegg has one for $1,800. Perhaps used ones will be cheap enough for me by 2010.

I have seen this laptop and played with it briefly at Bestbuy once. It's one of the coolest little laptops I've ever seen. The glossy screen looked quite nice, too.

The major downsides compared to the X-series are the keyboard, which is a bit clumsy and uncomfortable (hard metallic keys and notice the spaces between them, plus the Ins/Home/End/Del/Pgup/Pgdn are not where they should be), and lack of a trackpoint, which is a very big deal. Even though the resolution is very high (140DPI), I thought the screen was quite readable. However, I must admit I didn't think about looking into the DPI/fontsize settings - I'm pretty sure they had it boosted up.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't buy the X series mostly because of the lack of optical drive, but if I was given an X series, I could use it, whereas I couldn't use this laptop. I'm far too much of a power user to be able to live with a touchpad as a default pointing device, and I don't feel like carrying a mouse everywhere I go.
