So did anyone buy an iPhone?

I see that there were fairly long lineups at the stores, though nothing like the Windows 95 mania I remember.
I do believe Apple will sell lots, and especially to Mac/iPod aficionados, though I predict that they will have a hard time selling to corporate customers (not much to gain, a lot more to lose for them). Whether they can do the planned 10M in the first year though, with only AT&T in the US, and the subsidized price at $599 ... I wonder ...

One of my cousins and a friend of mine each got one of the 8GB models. Don't know how they're doing since I haven't heard from either of them since they txt'd me that they had them.
Probably still locked up somewhere slobbering all over them.

They look cool on the TV ads, but all that touching of the LCD would have me screeching in about one hour
I like the ole stylus on my Axim. Plus to spend $600 on a converged device is not smart, what happens if the phone part or the PDA part poops out?

It's going to have to come down in price (significantly) for me to ever consider getting something like that. And by that, I mean both the phone AND the monthly service contract. I can't imagine having all five of my current PacBell <strike that>, Cingular <strike that one too>, AT&T cell phones at $60 per month EACH.

Well, I jumped on the bandwagon and picked up an 8GB model. The thing is-where I live, AT&T's coverage is spotty at best-but I am a sucker for gadgets and got one.
So far after playing with it for a few hours, it is a very impressive device. Not perfect yet, but it does things that just make you go 'Wow!'. The on-screen keyboard is going to take some getting used to, but my proficiency has already improved in the last few hours. One thing I like-it is very fast. The Edge network is just so-so, but connect via Wifi and it is very useable.
The user interface is very easy to use and understand-although I did watch most of the videos on Apple's website before I bought the phone, so I knew what to do. But the fact is most people could pick it up and have it figured out pretty quickly. The fact you don't have to punch a bunch of tiny physical buttons helps in this regard as the on-screen buttons and controls are very easy to use.
Worth all the hype? So far, to me, yes.

I'm going to wait this one out.
I'd like:
(1) No vendor lock-in. My current phone is cingular/at&t mobility, but it was a low cost/free model so I don't care if it is locked in.
(2) 3G. EDGE is too slow.
(3) Flash and Instant Messenger.
It's going to be a long wait for me. But I don't use my phone for anything other than voice.

I agree that EDGE is really too slow for IMAP and web surfing (which is what most iPhone users will likely do).
Blackberries do fine on it (well, for email, as web access is generally no fun), but that's because they use BES servers which optimize the mail data traffic, allowing the device to send and receive emails that are a fraction of the size of what actually arrives in your mailbox. Even attachments viewed on a Blackberry are processed on BES -- BES will open that 8 MB PowerPoint, and then extract the text and scale the images to Blackberry screen size before transmitting them. 5K+ emails a month, and my Blackberry data usage is still under 20 MB!

I really like the specs on the iphone, and would put the price down for one, but Im concerned about this venture into the phone industry. Maybe apple did it perfectly right and the iphone really is going to be the ipod of the cellular industry in a few years from now. With that said, I am still leaning toward the nokia e90. And if people complain about the $600 iphone price tag, wait til you see the prices on most of the wifi/mp3/gps/phone-computer the world market buys...in fact, $600 is pretty cheap for the features you get. The E90 and many of the HTC models easily costs more than a basic T61, and most dont even have the 8gb storage!!!
There are some groovy pictures of the iPhone's insides. A quick Google will get you there. The battery is pretty much a big as the rest of it combined. One phone showed a sticker that said it would take an unlocked SIM card (Joy
). One story said there were about 16 screws holding it together, so it looks like it was built tightly for unpampered use. ... JDH
Both my cousin and my friend finally emerged from seclusion. The activation process was both long and painful, but now that it's up and running, they're both reporting that it's wonderful.

This is why I now have an unlocked phone (Blackberry) and will only ever again purchase an unlocked phone. Insert good SIM and go. 10 seconds max. Thanks, though, for posting how well it worked after activation. I expensed the Blackberry and it may not be long for this world. We'll see. ... JDHnonny wrote:<snip> The activation process was both long and painful, <snip>
On the flip side, HTCs don't sell in the tens of millions. The new Blackberry Curve, with the built-in camera and better email capability (though music requires spending $25 on a 2 GB MicroSD card) is only $199 at AT&T. And most other smartphones (BlackJack, Pearl, E62, Treo etc) are even less expensive -- the only one at $299 is the business-oriented Blackberry 8800 (which includes GPS).ducky2802 wrote:And if people complain about the $600 iphone price tag, wait til you see the prices on most of the wifi/mp3/gps/phone-computer the world market buys...in fact, $600 is pretty cheap for the features you get. Not to mention that I'm yet to be convinced of the iPhone's suitability as a serious email device. Typing on a touch-screen doesn't seem terribly appealing to me!

Personally, I am sick of hearing about the iPhone. I'll would rather get a Treo or a Samsung Blackjack instead. I really could care less about smart phones. So if you want to ask my thoughts about the iPhone, here they are.........
STOP TALKING ABOUT THE iPHONE! You have to be a sucker to pay that much money for a phone that had an iPod built in. (No offense to those here who got iPhones) Most modern cell phones and smart phones can do all the same things as the iPhone does and some of them do many of those functions better than the iPhone does. (some moto Razr have built in GPS for example). The iPhone is not revolutionary, its evolutionary.

I have finally rejoined the dark side.

It may be revolutionary ... but only as far as industrial design and marketing goes. The functionality is certainly not earth-shattering, as you say.Stargate199 wrote:The iPhone is not revolutionary, its evolutionary.
I'm unlikely to buy one, but I'm still interested in studying the phenomenon.

I think it is a pretty neat device. Nevertheless, there are a couple of gotchas.
1. It currently only works on the slow, inconsistant, EDGE network. Not on at&t's much better 3G HSDPA network.
2. You have to return it to Apple (or maybe at&t) to have the battery replaced. The battery life is estimated at 400 charges.
One article I read concerning the iPhone quoted a comedian who said: “Not gonna do it. Wouldn’t be prudent.”
[you get to guess who]

Toms reply is well taken. However, none of the devices listed include the well featured wifi of the iphone. Though wireless is hardly a new feature, it seems to be a considerable price factor... Compare the street price of a new E62 at 150-200 and a new E61 at almost 200 more. I do agree that the iphone is a bit on the pricey side, but features for the dollar, its pretty reasonable. I used the those cingular htc models, both of them, and they offered similar features for the dollar at 400-500 with contract, the phone aspect left much to be desired, especially when compared to a 5 year old nokia. The same concern plagues me on the iphone. Apple is new and while I am a mac fan at heart, I have yet to see how they do here.

Just an update on my iphone purchase, and a reply to some of the comments here: I am definitely not an apple 'fanboy' at all, although I do appreciate their products. Secondly, I am returning my iphone not because of any faults with the iphone itself-it's because AT&T/Cingular's service SUCKS in my area. Their coverage map is a joke and a lie. If I had good service in my area, you would have to pry the iphone from my cold, dead fingers-after a few days of using it, it still amazes me how well it operates.
I have used some of the other devices that were mentioned in this thread, and though each has its own merits and strengths, overall they just don't measure up to the iphone.
My advice, even if you aren't interested in buying one-go to a local AT&T store or apple store and give a demo a chance for ten minutes or so. Only after you actually use one do you see what the buzz is all about.

A guy at a bar in Jersey was playign with his iPhone so that EVERYONE would see him, and it worked.
He wouldn't let me hold it at first, but I pretty much told him to STFU and let me see. The screen is beautiful. I pinched a picture of his dog and it got larger, then I scrolled through his album collection.
I ordered another drink and didn't talk about the iPhone after that.

I'm all for WM devices, but $900? You can already run the silly iPhone interface on any WM5 or 6 touchscreen device, but we all know how flashy interfaces go...
And the whole deal with the "real internet." It pisses me off when they act like we've all been getting shafted on WAP internet, but do you want full pages loading over EDGE on your cell phone? That's why WAP is there.
THIS is the iPhone killer (plus it'll probably be $400-something for top of the line model). 16GB for less than a 4GB iPhone...Supposed to come out early '08.

wow! that is fantastic! sounds too good to be true..
Any idea when it's on sale and if it's coming to Europe?
well in Greece if you make a one year contract with a provider, you just need to pay ~ €300, so not bad at all..
Only thing it cannot do, is make you a nice cup of coffee
