Rapid discharge of battery while in hibernation on a T40
When I left my office on Friday my battery was fully charged on my T40 (2373-8CU) before entering hibernation mode. This morning when I resumed the T40 from hibernation I received a critical message for my battery as it was close to the 5% level and my unit subsequently froze whereby I had to reset it, and the clock on the taskbar is not reporting the correct time. The unit is only one month old and was wondering if there is any software fixes before sending the unit for service, I updated the BIOs last week.

Are you positive you were hibernated and not in standby?
I don't see how the battery could deplete like that when hibernated. Were there any lights still showing on the status indicator bar on the bottom of the display while it was hibernated? If so, then it was in standby, not hibernate.

James

I am !00% positive the system was in hibernative mode, next time it occurs I will send it in for repair, the problem seems to be tied to the system clock since the time clock stops responding for a while.
ibm fix for battery drain when hibernating
I don't remember the details, but I recall seeing quite a bit of documentation of a problem like this one, along with update fixes for it, on the ibm website. On older versions of certain drivers or programs, the system is programmed to awake from hibernation at certain intervals in such a way that the battery drains down. You might want to look through the summaries of updates that apply to your system. I think I recall that IBM acknowledged a problem like this as a software issue and provided a fix for it in the form of one or more software updates.
Re: ibm fix for battery drain when hibernating
I believe you're referring to the bad implementation of "Wake on LAN" that was originally shipped on the T40/41.t41user wrote:I don't remember the details, but I recall seeing quite a bit of documentation of a problem like this one, along with update fixes for it.
What this did was awaken the laptop from standby to check for a wake call from the LAN, but I don't believe it would awaken a hibernated system.
Could be wrong though.

The thing about the clock stopping rings an even older bell than the T40, but I don't remember anything else about it.
