Thinkpad T40 Problem

#1 Post by pduan87 » Sun Jul 01, 2007 4:33 am

I recently bought an used Thinkpad T40 and I have been running into some problems with it. It has a very peculiar problem where if I try and boot up, it will hang without showing anything on the screen 3-5 times in a row. The lights will be on but the computer will be completely unresponsive. When it does boot up, sometimes there will be signal in a connected monitor, sometimes not. After loading windows, it occasionally freezes up completely.

Now the hard drive on this machine is good and I am assuming that bad ram cannot cause problems such as these. The only possible thing that could be wrong with it is a defective motherboard, correct?

With Memtest86, you can check your memory. Maybe you can check wit PC Doctor from IBM if your motherboard is faulty.

What happens when you try to boot into Safe mode (holding F8 when booting) ?

I'm going to vote for a loose video chip.

If true, you'll need a new systemboard. Maybe you have recourse via seller?
