Machine is a Z61e UB02YUK
1.66 GHZ Core Duo T2300, 1 Gig Ram, 80 Gig HDD. Intel graphics. Factory installed Vista Business Edition
Benchmark all with WINXP
Dell Precision M70, 2 GHZ Pentium M, 1 Gig Ram,
Dell D620, 2.13 GHZ Core Duo, 2 Gig Ram
Thinkpad, R50E 1.4GHZ Celeron, 512 Ram
The D620 is a touch faster than the M70 but little real performance difference as both quick machines, open applications quickly, start up quickly and install new applications quickly. I ran a beta of Vista on the M70 and it was still a fast machine, a touch slower than XP Pro. The R50e is a nippy machine a bit slow with very large Photoshop images but it is a lower spec than above machines.
Was called in to set up a friends Z61e, set up the wireless router, connect laptop to the net, install MS Office and install printer drivers and Lightroom.
This Z61e could best be described as quite slow. Startup taking twice as long as most other modern laptops with XP.
Internet Explorer opens quite slowly. Installation of Office and Lightroom say over twice as long as on other modern machines.
Due to the speed of the machine you assume a double click has not worked and you do it again and get multi starts of applications.
The R50e with a 1.4 Celeron is a speed demon compared to the Z61e.
In Vista is there an MSCONFIG with a Start tab to turn off extra startup programmes?
Has anyone had similar results. It's like running XP on a Pentium 300 with 128 Megs of RAM.

The easiest way to speed it up would be to increase the RAM to 2GB. PC2-5300 modules are dirt cheap these days. Vista isn't practical unless one has at least 2GB of RAM.
Reducing the number of icons in the system tray also helps.

Re: New Z61e slow with facory Installed Vista
You are not the only one that thinks that, I have a Z61M with Vista Business preinstalled, my tower with a clean copy of Vista runs better than the preinstalled on my laptopDrumtochty wrote: This Z61e could best be described as quite slow.
