Getting Wireless working on my 600x.
Hi All
I'm trying to get my 600 working on wireless, but I'm pretty clueless. I have a 2wire 802.11g pr card wireless adapter.
I've slotted it in, but have no idea how to tell it it's there. Do i need drivers? Is that card going to work?
It's running Debain linux v4 if that's any help.
I'm new to linux as well as thinkpads/maintaining pcs, so any help would be much appreciated!
Cheers.

Getting wireless cards to work with Linux is trick business. If the wireless card you have has the Atheros chipset, you chances of getting to work are a lot better. You will need to do a few google searches to get this to work. Also, this question is better suited to the Linux OS thread. Your question can be bettered answered there. Let a moderator know you want this moved, do not make a duplicate post. I am also putting a note at the bottom so if by chance a Mod sees this, they can move
Mods, please move this over to the Linux forum. This is better suited there.

For the record, I've had really good luck with the Intel 802.11g cards thats in my thinkpad. The drivers worked out of the box and didn't really require anything at all from me on my T60-2623-D6U. I am running Ubuntu 7.04.
In the past Atheros was really the only solution as there was really just Broadcomm or Marvell at the time (for 802.11) other than Atheros which would require the ndiswrapper stuff to work.
If its not an Atheros or Intel chip you should look up ndiswrapper as it will normally allow you to run your Windows wifi drivers under Linux. Unfortunately, its not as easy as the Intel or Atheros solutions as they actually have Linux Drivers.

Brad

I tried those commands (I couldn't do some cos the | symbol doesn't seem to work on that pc for some reason) and it seemed to be a lot of not founds.
I've just remembered I'm running a low memory version of the OS now (64mb). I'll get the extra memory and try again.
Will it know when the extra memory is added and do a full linux install, or will I have to reinstall? And if so, how?
I just tried to reinstall the os on my x21 and broke it!

If the pipe doesn't work on your keyboard you can do the following
$dmesg > temp
$ grep eth temp
$ grep atheros temp
instead of
$dmesg | grep eth
$dmesg | grep atheros
The pipe just lets you take the output of dmesg and pipe it (put it) into the input of grep.
In terms of memory, Linux does not need to be reinstalled to make use of extra RAM. However, it is possible that it chose to install different programs based on your system (some apps do not require the same memory and processor requirements, but are not as pretty.)
In terms of commands, if you are missing any that you want, you should be able to install them via apt. I normally use sudo apt-get install [package] on my Ubuntu system.
