i got triple boot running with xp, vista and ubuntu 7.04 and there is no doubt - linux is the winner. everything was working from first boot and installing the ATI driver was easier than in windows.
"Evolution" is a fine replacement to outlook, tho importing mails/contacts is terrible.
Ubuntu is differently worth your time if your a gonna install linux.

I would agree to a certain point.
pros
- matlab works great in ubuntu
- i really like the linux environment.
cons
- My middle button on the ultranav doesn't work to scroll up/down. *
- Solidworks/Photoshop aren't made for linux.
- I can't seem to get beryl (or any desktop effects) to work (i think my video card is not supported.)
*edit*
actually i got the middle button scrolling work now.

I would add the default font sizes are bigger in Ubuntu which makes reading much easier on a 14" SXGA+ than XP if you do a clean XP install which I have. Vista does scale much better.
There's a few hardware items that I haven't got going like my scanner, If you are just looking for something basic to get on the internet, a little Office or photo editing, it can be a good choice. Sometimes finding an answer can be more difficult. It's too bad they don't offer it on more machines.

There isent a program feature for windows that is not easily gotten for linux and free and if all fails just install the windows program in linux (wine) - how can you beat that? i have windows explore and the whole office pack running in linux just for fun...
free wireless scanner, pdf editor, vector editor, open office, mail programs, media players,
installing beryl and emerald is a [censored] with ATI, i got beryl to work but not emerald - sadly ATI never paid much attention to Linux like nvidea does - lets hope AMD change that.
Cons are of course that everything seems hard or complex to do after 15 years with windows, but i think new windows users face the same problem.
