Hi,
Looking at upgrading the existing 256 RAM on this R31.
Now, I'm not so computer savvy, so could do with a little advice here. I've been told that both memory slots are full, so that means a 128 in each hole.
My options are either remove one bank and put a 512 in, making 640, remove both and put matching 256 in each making 512, or go for 1GB with 2 x 512's.
I would like to know is there a problem with mismatching RAM (different sizes, different manufacturers) ? Also, with 1GB would this machine be amazingly quick ? Its got the 1.13 pentium 3 (not celeron), but I wonder if this processor is underpowered to get the most from the big RAM. Also the 1GB is quite expensive, and hard to justify (although it would be nice !). It is cheaper than buying 2 x 256's.
Its not really used for any "heavy" apps, mainly web related stuff.
Please advise me as to the best course of action. I would probably be inclined to put one 512 in there and leave an existing 128.
Trying to squeeze a couple more years out of her 'til I can buy a used R61, tight so and so that I am.
Cheers.
R31 RAM upgrade - 512 enough or 1 GB ?

Re: R31 RAM upgrade - 512 enough or 1 GB ?
I think this is the best balance between cost and performance gain. 640MB will make the machine quite a bit faster than 256MB, while 1GB will probably feel just as fast as 640MB.INTJ wrote:I would probably be inclined to put one 512 in there and leave an existing 128.
No, the two sticks don't need to match; 512MB + 128MB should work. Sell the extra 128MB stick for $5US.
