4GB support on X61s

#1 Post by spune » Wed Jul 04, 2007 5:44 pm

I'm planning to buy the Thinkpad X61s and install Vista Business x64 separately. I was wondering if if the laptop fully supports 4GB of RAM. Apparently the T61 only supports a maximum of T61 3GB due to the restrction in the BIOS, according to this post:

I remain unconvinced ... the only evidence is that "a friend tried and phoned me with the bad news". Meanwhile, I have seen multiple posts where the full 4 GB (less the shared memory used by graphics) is available using Linux. The tabook also says that 4 GB is available to 64-bit operating systems.

So at least in my books it's only a rumour so far until someone presents some evidence to the contrary.

HP has some papers about the Windows RAM allocation scheme...

...which explain what usually is cut off from the system RAM by the BIOS.
