T60p Model Differences please

#1 Post by Oldguy » Thu Jul 05, 2007 12:14 pm

I am a please owner of faithful A21e 2628-JXU ThinkPad, and am currently “window shopping” for a new laptop for part time AutoCAD work.

Some advice and clarification if you please. I am unsure of some of the differences in two select models, in consideration of price differences (and as yet, am not in a definitive purchasing position, otherwise would call the 1-800 number)

All prices are Canadian dollars (for comparison)
8744-C9U: WinXP, 2GB Ram Bluetooth V 2.0+EDR and Thinkpad wireless a/b/g/n
This is listed at $1,999. The Bluetooth being the latest implementation of this technology (?) and the wireless /n being the so-call “draft N” – the new faster Wi-Fi (If I get a new N wireless router that is- right)

Then there is the 8744-J2U. Similar to above, but with Vista Business, Bluetooth 1-05 and an Intel a/b/g card. Priced at the same $1,999. So for the same money, I have a choice between new and emerging peripheral technology (standards) and “proven” CAD environment XP –OR- Latest OS – Vista, with “older” stable peripheral technology.

The OS aside (AutoCAD 2007/2008 will run in either), are there pros and cons as to the wireless and Bluetooth technologies.

Here is where I get fuzzy….
there is an 8741-C2U – similar to C9U other respects, but with Intel a/b/g wireless, AND 2.16 Mz processor (vs 2.0 for both 8744’s) for the amazing price of $3519!

Now, based on the specs from Lenovo.ca’s website, is 0.16 mZ increase in processor speed worth $1520 CDN. I feel I must be missing something, am I. Also the 8744’s are “Top Sellers”. Does this in its self account for the radical price reduction??

All three 15.4 wide screen, 2GB ram 100MB HD ATI FireGL V5250

I am leaning to the 8744-J2U at the moment.

Confused by lenovo marketing…. Jim “Oldguy” L

Based on what I've seen on Lenovo's site in Canada, it all depends if the model is Topseller or not. If it is, the price is normal. If not, it is outrageous. In many cases differences between models are negligible, excepting the price.
