T61 – Replace Vista with XP

Hello all. I recently received my T61 and removed Vista Business, not before making an image, and reinstalled XP. I followed these instructions,

Everything seems to be working fine expect that I can’t successfully shut the system down. I get to the Windows is shutting Down screen and it just sits there. I’ve tried removing and reinstalling drivers and nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

odds are your system isn't in ACPI mode. Go to the device manager and check under computer and see if it says Standard APM, if so then right click and choose update driver, choose one and then select Standard ACPI one from the list.

(those aren't the exact names but i'm sure you can figure it out)

When I go to Device Manager, and click on System Devices, I see several ACPI items. (ex. ACPI Fixed Feature Button, ACPI Lid, ACPI Sleep Button.. etc.) Are they correct?

I didn't know that even if you get a ThinkPad with Vista the XP install files and folders are still available on the HD like normal.

Can anyone confirm?

I found all the drivers on the following site.

Getting it to run correctly is unfortunately the difficult part. (No shutdown or sleep.)

No, I'm not talking about installing drivers. I'm talking about installing the OS, Windows XP, itself. Did you install it from your own retail cd, or did you find the windows XP install files buried away with the Vista install files in the hidden folders on your C drive?

That's what I'm asking.

I have a copy of WinXPsp2 that I used.

I dont understand why people don't like vista 'cause it works for me just fine.
I have a T61 766416U with Vista Business which is stable (Intel's new Turbo Memory drive fixed the BSOD problem), and fast (boot time is about 50secs).
If you need a clean install and little bit optimizing, here is a good guide.

I'm not very familiar with T61s but you can try using the Thinkvantage system update. It's a web app that automatically detects your system model number and downloads any device drivers you may not have installed. Every time I format my hard drive and reinstall XP I overlook a driver or two. This tool has worked wonders for me whenever that happens.

Give it a try. You'll need Internet Explorer for it to work.

I will admit that I am liking Vista after it has settled down a bit and I have turned off some things. The main problem however is that many drivers do not operate. In fact I get freezups just trying to install some drivers. I use this computer for work and play. For play it works fine with Vista. For work I need XP since my apps and equipment works with it. So yea, VISTA is BROKEN.

That's great that it works fine for you, but different people have different needs. For some Vista does not fill the need. In my case Vista does not do what I need it to do. Maybe it will after SP1, maybe not. Regardless, for now I can't use Vista for my computer needs.
Everyone has different uses/requirements from their computer.
