SOLD - T42 - 15" Flexview SXGA+ - Great Condition

#1 Post by BruceDickinson » Fri Jul 06, 2007 1:40 pm

T42 with 15” SXGA+ / Flexview in great shape. Pictures below.

Model: 2373-NC1
EZServ Warranty through July 26, 2007
Intel Mobile Pentium M 1.7GHz
1 GB RAM (2 x 512MB)
40GB HDD 5400rpm
15.1" SXGA+ TFT Flexview / IPS LCD
64MB ATI Radeon 9600 GPU
CD-RW/DVD combo drive
802.11 a/b/g wireless
6-cell battery
1 GB ethernet
56K modem
XP Pro with product key
Original manual
Restore CD’s

New NMB (China) keyboard. Comes with a Targus Universal adapter.

Screen is in excellent shape, beautiful Flexview--though not 100% perfect. There are 3 dead or stuck pixels with a light reddish color (they might be sub-pixels) located well away from the center in different directions. I’ve tried the various techniques for reviving them, without luck. You have to look very hard to find them. Also, there is an extremely small and light nick / scratch toward the upper left corner that effectively looks like a single dead pixel.

Runs cool and quiet. Undervolts to .7v at 6x multiplier via Notebook Hardware Control. I haven’t tried undervolting at higher multipliers. Sanyo battery with 344 cycles, but it still holds a pretty good charge.

Currently has all Microsoft and IBM updates. Can be reset to original factory state via hidden partition.

The case has a some light scratches, consistent with gentle use.

I have never sold anything online before, so I can’t provide any selling credentials. I am selling this T42 because I purchased another Thinkpad that I like a little more. I recently bought this from an individual who took great care of it.

I think $500 (plus shipping) is a fair price. I do not want to ship outside of the United States. Because the warranty is expiring soon, if it doesn’t sell here soon, I’ll go to ebay.

Please PM me if interested. Thanks for looking.

-Rich Gallagher

The top picture is gorgeous (I can't believe I just said that).

This should be gone in no time.

Would the person who PM'ed me around 3:10PM EST please try again? Your message never made it to my Inbox, (although I did receive the e-mail notification). Thanks.

A later PM (3:29PM EST) (presumably from a different sender) did arrive in my Inbox--so hopefully my Inbox is working :)

Sweet. It looks barely used.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Yes, from IKEA. Love the inner compartment. Great for hiding remotes.

That picture is stunning!! And the price is worth it - my T42 with very similar specs I've had for not quite 2 weeks and it is an absolute joy to use. And the Flexview is big part of that. All the best with the sale :)

gator, would bankruptcy be your sole outcome if you purchased, or is that linked to a divorce settlement where you'd get nothing?

I am young and single, and have not yet fallen into the trap   I'd be close to being bankrupt if I buy that machine, my roommates will probably kick me out since I won't be able to pay the rent/bills if I get that T42 ...

I caved in and sent a PM. I don't know if I should be ashamed (for giving in to temptation) or happy (to have a go at this machine).

An update...

Thought I had a buyer...
I put off other suitors (mistake)..
buyer has backed out...

...T42 available.

Warranty is extendable (hasn't been extended before).

Restore disks were made after restoring the T42 to factory condition.

Price is $500 plus shipping (plus whatever fees that may be associated with the transaction).

With the warranty running out July 26, I think I should start the ebay process tomorrow (I've heard Sunday is the best day to start on).

Thanks to all who've complimented the machine.

I'll recommend to include a buyers list in your original post.

Man, two weeks ago that would have been exactly what I've been searching for.
In the meantime - by chance - I got two T42p's UXGA - so my budget is
overstreched already ... nevertheless your T42 looks really tempting.

I've sold over 40 computers and have found this to be the best policy: the laptop goes to whoever gives me the $$$ first, and it remains available for sale until that happens.

Go for it, and price it a heck of a lot higher than you did here. Last week, I sold a T42 with far lower specs for near that price, within 20 minutes of listing.

Thanks, jargoone, I was just about to list it there. Another first for me.

A quick heads-up...

1) May fire and brimstone rain down on the Nigerian scammer who won my ebay auction tonight (along with five other laptop auctions) and who now has me toiling in ebay scam-resolution hell.

2) The T42 will not go to Nigeria (although I'm sure it's lovely).

3) The T42 is available. And it really is nice.

4) If you ever do an ebay auction with a "Buy It Now" option, be sure that you check off "Immediate Payment." I didn't even notice it or think about it. It's apparently the only way to protect yourself from this kind of scam.

5) Thank you for listening to me vent :( :)

I know how frustrated you feel - I had a Nigerian scammer stuff up my Buy It Now; fortunately though he/she unregistered him/herself after the auction finished so I was able to get an immediate final value fee refund. I'd never thought or seen the Immediate Payment option before I listed my old T40 on either the first or second occasions (where I was happy to get someone genuinely pay for it and be happy with it when they received it).

Theres also an option to block any bids from outside of the country that you've listed as 'ship to only'.

"Block buyers who:

* Are registered in countries to which I don't ship
* Have a feedback score equal to or lower than -1
* Have received 2 Unpaid Item strikes in the last 30 days"

And even with all those safeguards, if you still wish to have an "auction-style" listing, you can get screwed by someone who has a stolen account.

I just got hit twice, on two separate auctions, for the same cell phone. The first time, they killed the user's account quickly, so I could re-list for free right away. The second time, it was with a stolen account, and it basically takes two whole weeks for you to get your final value credit back.

The biggest crock is that only insertion fees, on only the first relist is free, no matter how many times you get scammed. You always have to pay for the upgrades, and on second and successive relists, you have to pay the insertion fee. In case you're wondering why eBay doesn't put in draconian measures against scamming, there's your answer: they profit from it.

So yeah, it's a pain. But if you want the most money for your item, it's usually the best way.

Yeah...in any case you're acknowledging the risks involved each time you list something or buy something.

Back on topic though - hopefully this laptop will find an owner here if not an honest one via eBay.

Bummer but understandable.

I think jargoone's analysis re: ebay / scams / scam-profiteering is right on. The more I learn about and experience how ebay (and paypal) do business, the more skeptical I become.

Thanks, all, for the advice and moral support.

So it sold to a local buyer via Craigslist. Thanks to everyone here for advice and encouragement.

It was a little sad, I have to admit, to see it go. I bet a lot of you know what I mean.

Thanks again to all.
