how do I connect my 360d to the web

#1 Post by zafod37 » Mon Oct 18, 2004 2:33 pm

:? My mate got a thinkpad 360d given, it runs win 98. He wants to connect to the internet, but we are both stumped (it doesn't take a lot to stump me mind). Anyway, the thinkpad has a sportster 33.6 winmodem in the side slot, but there are no cables. Also he wants broadband, but without a usb slot I dont think its possible.
Can I still get cables for this modem, and also is broadband a possability?
Your help is greatly apreciated.

Mark,

There ain't no such animal as a 360D, could you check that number again or post the specific model number and type from the label on the bottom of the machine (should be in the format XXXX-XXX)?

If the Sportster modem isn't the type that has a retractable connector, there is little sense in paying the exorbitant amount of money usually asked for the cables when the entire modem can be replaced for $5!

Given the fact that there's a PC card modem in the unit, I feel safe in saying that you could get an ethernet card and access the net via broadband. You could even get a WiFi NIC! No USB required.

Regards,

James

Told you it didn't take much to confuse me.
I have copied the numbers off the bottom of the thinkpad
c-no 3803auk
e-no mo9613 - 00005
psd 29-08-1997

IBM type 2635

does this help?
The current modem is fitted in the pcmica port.

OK, type 2635 is a 380D, which doesn't have quite as many barnacles on it as a 360 series machines.

Product number should be either 2635-2AU or 3AU (might be 2AG or 3AG or similar depending on where you're located).

You can get a 56K baud modem card as well as a wired or wireless network card for the 2 PCMCIA slots.

Just remember that the cards MUST be 16BIT (not CARDBUS).
