Replacing A Power Jack - R40
The yellow plastic on my power jack is cracked, and as a result the AC adapter doesn't connect very tightly, and sometimes disconnects when disturbed. This is slightly annoying.
How tough is it to replace one? It looks like there might be soldering involved. I got an R40. Is the jack soldered on the mobo?

Sort of depends on the system you have. Some laptops may have the DC input socket soldered onto the motherboard or "sub card" or "I/O card". Others, like the T2x series, are simply held in place with a screw and there's wires leading from the socket to a small plug-in connector.
To make it easier for others to know what kind of system(s) you have, you can update your "profile" page (link at the top of the page) and provide this information in your "signature" line. Try to keep it down to only a couple of lines and no graphics, animated icons and the like.

Sorry from me too... I must not have seen your mention of "R40" when I replied to your original post.
The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the R40 is available from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45899
(At the moment, this site does not seem to be accessable. I finally found a copy on a mirror site but since it's not directly from IBM or Lenovo, I'm not going to list the URL.) This HMM contains diagrams which indicate where and how the DC input jack is connected to the system. In the case of your system (and apparently all 8 types numbers of R40
), it seems like it is connected directly on the motherboard.
A quick search on eBay seems to confirm this. Here's is one of about 30:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0138438714
It says that the DC jack needs to be soldered. FYI: Use "dc jack r40 ibm" as the search string at eBay.

If that cost estimate is also for the labor involved in tearing down your system and putting it back together, then you can probably save some money by doing that yourself and leave just the soldering operation to the techs. It shouldn't take any more than 5 minutes to heat up the soldering iron, apply it to four places and visually check the connections. All you would need to do is follow the instructions in the Hardware Maintenance Manual to remove the keyboard and keyboard bezel and then carefully transport the laptop to the service shop.
