IBM/Lenovo/Hitachi Drive Fitness Test

#1 Post by sktn77a » Sun Jul 08, 2007 6:11 pm

Hi All:

I have an 80Gb Hitachi laptop drive in a USB enclosure that appears to be corrupting files. The normal Windows drive software isn't picking up anything untoward but the files (jpeg pictures) have backwards bands across them when I copy to the hitachi. If I copy them to a CDRW, they're fine. Can I use the DFT on a USB drive?

No. Not directly. You are going to need to take it out of its housing and mount it somewhere in a machine.

You could easily do it with one of these :)

Yep, I already have one of those. Just one problem, though - I boot to the DFT with the CD-ROM but cannot then hot-swap the HDD adapter under DOS (or whatever environment DFT runs under).

Unfortunately, you need more pieces. You could run DFT from A bootable USB device (floppy or CD). I do this all the time, so I have a desktrop machine (old clunker) that I use only for testing drives. The case is always open and there is an IDE cable with a 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inch adapter hanging out.

Yup, I bought one (USB Floppy) for occasions just like this one.

One can just swap out the main drive and boot DFT from CD. It's only 5 screws.

Actually, I guess I could do that as the drive doesn't need have the OS, etc on it.

Woops. Here I was thinking that it a bundled IBM/Lenovo package that was missing from my machine.

Thanks.
