How to check for 3gb/s or 1.5gb/s hard drive

#1 Post by dtzihe » Sun Jul 08, 2007 8:17 pm

Does anyone with a T60 know how to check if your computer is using a 3gb/s or 1.5gb/s hard drive? I bought a Seagate 7200.2 120gb and I'd like to know what transfer speed I am using. Thanks.

It really, really, really doesn't matter since your 7200.2 cannot read data off the disk media faster than 0.59 Gb/s anyway.

The only thing that can be read faster is the 8 MB cache -- and even with 1.5 Gb/s you can already empty that cache in 50 milliseconds. At best, you would gain 25 ms by being able to empty the cache sooner, and that's assuming the cached data is exactly what you are trying to read.

3 Gb/s will matter, for the foreseeable future, only for RAID implementations.

Laptop hard drives are physically way too slow maintain a sustained throughput of more than 200MB/s. Worrying about the 1.5GB/3GB/s interface limit is kind of moot point.
