I see that Lenovo now has a webpage on this issue.

* If your battery has failed, use the Battery Verification Tool to determine if you are eligible for a replacement. If you are eligible, you will automatically be directed to the site where you can request a replacement.
* Lenovo is offering replacements only for batteries that have failed due to this problem. Lenovo will replace these failed batteries for up to 6 months past the expiration date of the battery warranty.

ThinkPad battery will not charge or discharge and gives an "Irreparable Damage" error message

my 6 cell battery was not under the previous battery recall..

then i experienced this problem..
