Looking for a used T40 series

#1 Post by spune » Tue Jul 10, 2007 8:20 pm

What's the main difference between the T40, T41, and T42? I understand that the T40 is based on the Banias chip and the T42 is based on the Dothan chip. What about the T41?

Also, I found a T40 for $400 on Craigslist that I'm thinking of buying. It has a Penium M 1.5Ghz, 512MB, 40GB HDD, 802.11b. Is that a good deal? Can I swap out the 11b wireless card for an Intel ABG card?

Did the T40 ever come with Intel integrated graphics? All the T4x series laptops I've found came with ATi graphics; I'd like to get maximum battery life with integrated.

You got it right, the main difference is the procesoor (and by extension, the FSB speeds and the RAM that you can use on the motherboard). Most T41s came with the banias chip, but it is possible to upgrade to 400 FSB dothans. T42s have 533 FSB dothan chips. The T40 did not have the HDD protection system (other T4x have it), and there is no fingerprint reader on either T40/T41. Some later model T42s came with the FPR.

It is slightly expensive AFAIK, I have been seeing people sell T41s, even T42s at ~$450 on the forum. And yes, you can swap for an intel a/b/g card, but you gotta beware of the no-1802 error.

AFAIK, most T40s had only 32 ATI chips (either Radeon 7500 or 9000). A good reference for all your questions is the IBM tawbook.pdf, which contains info on all previous thinkpads relases and has info about all models. You can find it ehre:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... awbook.pdf

Hope that helps.

To expand on this, T42 do not have 533 FSB CPUs (that domain is reserved for the T43s), and only T43s came with Intel integrated graphics.
