Automatic startup/shutdown on T23 laptop: WOL functionality

#1 Post by ambush » Tue Oct 19, 2004 6:30 am

I am planning to use a T23 laptop for a critical application because of the size and because it has a battery so it won't stop in case of a power failure. The problem is that in order to keep the data from getting corrupt I want the laptop to automatically shutdown immediately when the external power is lost (ie when its running on battery only) and startup again automatically when the external power is back.
Is this at all possible?

Not only is it possible, it is automatic! Check your power settings. Should be happening by default, once the battery reaches a certain % remaining threshold.

I found the powersettings, thanks, but it doesn't say anything about the startup. You sure that the laptop will automatically startup when the power is back if it's been shutdown?

Mea clupa! No, it won't do that - sorry, I misread your post! :-(

Just checked the T23 BIOS settings. It actually support WOR (Wake-On-Ring). If I can simulate a call when the external power is back then the laptop should resume automatically. Unfortenately, I did not pay attention at my telecom classes so I have to read up on how incoming calls work (what voltage on what pins) but it shouldn't be that hard. A bit of ABC circuitry should do what I want, hopefully without frying the mainboard.

Wakeup functionality

#6 Post by ambush » Wed Oct 20, 2004 6:40 am

I've been fiddling around with the wakeup functionality on Thinkpad laptops. Most new NIC drivers support Wake-on-Link which would resume the system from standby when link is detected on the configured NIC. I've tested this with a Thinkpad T20 (3Com 10/100 mini-PC NIC) running W2K and it works flawlessly (couldn't test hibernate though because Pointsec software on the laptop was incompatible with hibernate functionality). However on the T23 laptop (Intel Pro 10/100 VE NIC) running XPpro this functionality does not work. I've downloaded the latest drivers from Intel and everything works just fine excep wakeup functionality. Does anyone know how to make Wake-on-Link work with Intel Pro 10/100 VE and XP?

Found the following in the readme of the latest (well from 2002 but anyway) drivers for the Intel 10/100 Pro card available from the IBM site:
- (Fix) System does not wake on link signal under Windows 2000
and XP (Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection)

Seems to be my problem so I install the drivers and test it again but no go. I start wondering if maybe XP SP2 has something to do with it. Perhaps I should try with a clean XP to rule out any incompatabilities will later software versions.
