T30 -changing hard drives

#1 Post by Dave_s » Thu Jul 12, 2007 9:07 pm

My T30 40GB IBM TRAVELSTAR internal hard drive just stopped working, just makes clicking sounds, and PC DOCTOR says no drive installed.

I have a 30 GB IBM TRAVELSTAR in a carrier that fits in same location as the DVD drive. I want to move the 30 GB drive from the external carrier into the internal carrier.

Where can I find instructions how to remove the drive from the external carrier?I removed 2 screws from bottom plate. Drive is now more movable. From top view, at the end of drive away from the connector, is a black plastic bar that is securing the drive. How do I move or remove that bar to free the drive? Or, what else mudt I do to free the drive?

Looks like only two screws need removing to change the drive in the interior carrier, correct?

Thanks, Dave_S

If it is similar to the ones that I have used, the bar lifts like a lever.

Once all screws are out (could be up to 4 on underside) just slide back away from conection and lift up at thr same tme. There is just enough clearance to do it.

I guess that my Chinese knock off must be slightly diferent, even thogh it has IBM logos on it, becauuse there is no bar over the drive, just 4 screws in the base of the holder.

On the one I use in the Wifes T23 you remove the screws then gently move the drive back from the IDE socket on the caddy being careful no to compress the drive. Once the pins on the drive are clear of the socket the drive can be lifted out. But then mine is also an "aftermarket" cheapie.

The 30 GB drive is out of the external caddy.

Now I am trying to remove the bad 40 GB drive from the internal carrier. I removed two screws from the vertical sides of carrier. Screws were very close to connector end of drive. How is the drive released from the internal carrier? Looks like it must be lifted up. Cannot remove so far.

Thank you for all of the help!

The Plastic case portion has two screws (1 each side) behind the litlle sprng clips. You need to pull that off to get at the screws. You can prise the sides gently off the screw heads.
