Upgrading internal wireless card on T40

#1 Post by spune » Thu Jul 12, 2007 10:25 pm

I'll be buying a T40 with the Cisco wireless-b tomorrow. I would like to know if I can install an Intel 2200BG wireless card in there instead. Will the Thinkpad recognize it? I've read Thinkpads are very picky when it comes to new hardware.

not that they are picky, just that IBM setup a "whitelist" of approved devices and that's where it's picky. You can turn it off per say or you can just buy the IBM version of the adapter you're looking for (eBay for sure or right here on the forums) and off you go.

Congrats on the new T, any IBM is always a good choice!

When you say the IBM version, do you mean the ThinkPad Atheros card? I've heard those get much better reception than the older Intel cards.

yup that's what i mean. There's normal Intel 2915 wifi cards too but then you'll also see IBM INtel 2915 or something like that. The Intel 2915 card will work but you'll get the 1802 error (and you'll have to use something to get past that, search for 1802 to read about it)

The IBM one wont give errors about anything like that, just plug it in and good to go.

For some users they do, for other users the Intel cards give better reception..... there's no a guarantee that one will be better than the other.

An IBM OEM version of the Intel 220BG will work in a T40 that has WiFi antennas fitted.

Cheers,

Bill
