What is wrong with Lenovo!??
I understand what you are saying tomh009, but I am the kind of person that views photos but does not edit them. I guess I am thinking more along the line of basic laptop use by consumers, secretaries, and the like, rather than more specialized business uses of a laptop. I wonder what percentage of typical laptop users really get involved photo editing? For those that spend any significant time photo editing, I suspect a 15" or larger display would be the norm.

LED backlight helps improve colour reproduction accuracy, yes. But it does not solve the viewing angle or the overall display quality -- and even with colour reproduction, it cannot make up the gap between a TN/PVA panel and an IPS/FFS one.Troels wrote:Hmm.. I just want good LCDs to come back on the market. What the point in widescreens when the contrast and color homogenity sùcks on all that is available?
LED screens apparently have not solved the issues from looking at the reviews.
Unfortunately IPS/FFS is relatively expensive and unlikely to be a standard display (for Lenovo or anyone else) in the near future. All we can really hope for is a more widely available IPS/FFS option (as we have had on the T series in the past, and currently have on the X61 tablet).

But having a keyboard with big enough keys is also important. Small laptops (12.1" and less) with widescreens can use bigger keyboards than those with 4:3 aspect ratio.GomJabbar wrote:IMO, the 4:3 aspect ratio makes the most sense, for the most people, on a smaller display (14.1" or less). On 14.1" display laptops (and smaller models), portability is usually an important factor for the owner.

You are right ... even when I look at the laptops at a typical media centre, I will be one of a very small number (and sometimes the only one) with a 12" laptop. Most photographers will be using 14-15" laptops, and MacBooks/MacBook Pros probably make up more than a third of those.GomJabbar wrote:I understand what you are saying tomh009, but I am the kind of person that views photos but does not edit them. They pick Apple because it is Apple, not for the quality of the LCD panels, which are the same as everyone else's LCD panels.

I apologize if it sounded like I was implying that Apple's LCDs are inferior to other brands'. I understood that Apple and many other brands use the same LCD panels. I was just saying that photographers would want the best LCDs possible and thus prefer Flexview screens. And for the record, I am not picky about display quality and have rarely seen a laptop display that I find crappy. When I wrote "crappy", I meant "crappy for photographers".asiafish wrote:They pick Apple because it is Apple, not for the quality of the LCD panels, which are the same as everyone else's LCD panels.

Most of the typesetting programs for newspapers, articles and so on, have been available for mac for a very long time. With newspapers comes a heavy load of photo editing and modification too, and it's also done on the mac, because it is the most convenient.
But my guess is that today, Macs are more of a tradition than actual need, in that field. The Cinema displays are nice, but completely pale in comarison to the IBM T221 or T210, but both are discontinued.

I haven't seen a crappy display since the days of passive matrix, which I found to be absolutely horrible.

Asiafish, have you used a thinkpad with a flexview screen? It really spoils you (atleast me!). I used to be perfectly happy with regular laptop screens, but after using my 15" T60, I just don't feel like working on TN panels anymore ... the colors are okay, but the bad contrast of TN panels bothers me.asiafish wrote:I haven't seen a crappy display since the days of passive matrix, which I found to be absolutely horrible.
I agree 100% to GomJabbar's points about widescreen usage for regular doucments. That is the exact same diffifulty I feel when I use a widescreen ...

Better yet, let's add it to the FAQ in the list of classic battles that won't be fought here. This is getting tedious, guys. It's unlikely that either side is going to convince the other.pheos wrote:or maybe the forum should do one!

Until they make a Flexview screen smaller I probably won't try one. 15" is just too large for me to consider it portable.gator wrote:Asiafish, have you used a thinkpad with a flexview screen? I understand and agree with your point ... 15" is not "mobile" ... but you have to see (not own) a 15" flexview atleast once ... once you see it in person you'll understand what I am saying.asiafish wrote:Until they make a Flexview screen smaller I probably won't try one. 15" is just too large for me to consider it portable.

Why look at it if I can't have it? If you only have enough money for a Hyundai, test driving a Mercedes is just an exercise in frustration.gator wrote:I understand and agree with your point ... 15" is not "mobile" ... but you have to see (not own) a 15" flexview atleast once ... once you see it in person you'll understand what I am saying.asiafish wrote:Until they make a Flexview screen smaller I probably won't try one. 15" is just too large for me to consider it portable.

Hm if I think about it... Thinkpads and my girlfriend have a lot in common... their both difficult to get in the exact right configuration,
but once I got it.... I don't want to give it away again
So now I just need a Thinkpad that matches my gf... like a
14" 4:3 Flexview t61p with all the goodies....
I feel so... imbalanced... without it.
