Hot power adapter, normal?

#1 Post by MartinB » Sat Jul 14, 2007 3:15 pm

I have two power adapters. One of them (IBM manufactured) generates a lot of heat, the other (Lenovo manufactured) does not. They don't have the same FRU, but are both 72W adapters. Is the IBM adapter supposed to generate noticeable more heat than the Lenovo?

I have IBM adapters for my T41 and they generally run cool (slightly warm). If I place it where heat cannot escape (e.g., on a blanket or upholstered seat, etc.) then they will get warmer than normal. Sometimes under charging and working load they will get hot, but not unduly so.

The two IBM ac adapters (one 72W, one 56W) for my T42 here never ran hot even with high cpu load + battery charging.

My original adapter failed. When I broke it open, I could see where there was a bad connection. That is probably why it ran too warm on occasion. The new one (I realize now) runs very cool.

The power adapters or my T41 don't get hot and generally stay at room temp or a little above that. I know those old 56W adapters got really hot at times. The one with my old 600E was like that.

Pretty much the same to my T42p adapter, slightly warm, but sometimes it gets a little bit hotter. I wouldn't worry though

I have a 90w Lenovo adapter, that began giving out a high pitched screeching noise today. When I examined it, it was insanely hot, too hot to hold! I unplugged it about 5 minutes, still too hot to hold for more than 10 sec.

I assume this is not normal.

Which T4x adapter, exactly, is that?

Cheers,

Bill, a quick Google search suggests it's a R/Z/T/X6x adapter he's talking about. :)

As for hot adapters, my non-IBM spare adapter does run warm at times (and is probably on the way out), although my genuine IBM one is never even warm to the touch.

Under max charging conditions (low battery, machine on and being used) I've found that my IBM and Lenovo adapters get warm, on the other hand my V200 Lenovo adapter (65W) does get hot.

AC adapters for all my thinkpads are averagely warm NOT hot..

But as for my r52, (a sanken) AC adapter gets very hot even under normal use, but it is running fine...:-)
