Media Center 2005 on a thinkpad

#1 Post by boardmonger » Tue Oct 19, 2004 11:48 pm

Now that it seems you can buy Windows XP media center 2005 (OEM) (New egg Link) has anyone thought about upgrading? From what I read media center is the same as windows XP pro, but with the media stuff added. I kind of think it would be fun to have the 10' interface (or what ever it is called) and the ability to record tv shows on my thinkpad.

I am hoping to get a free copy from a friend who was at the launch and I am not sure if I want to run it on my T42 using a usb 2.0 tuner or on desktop PVR system. I might even get another copy and do both :D.

Any thoughts from fellow thinkpad users?

MCE 2k5 is based on XP Home, not Pro. IMO, its not worth upgradeing because all MCE is is a program built into windows. nothing more.

Yeah after I posted I read more as well, I want to say the old media center was based of XP PRO not home (but I could be wrong) I just assumed because it had remote desktop it was based off of pro. I think it might be better to run Media center on a desktop and just copy the shows I want to watch onto my thinkpad.

Well, XP Home has remote desktop as well. It can only act as a client though. If you want a media center like program, check this out:

I have two Media Centre machines at home and honestly I'd say unless you have TV supportive hardware there really is no reason to install MC edition.

Also as a matter of preference, I much prefer WinXP Professional (which is what I have on me ThinkPad). :D
