T22 CPU upgrade

#1 Post by Garth » Sun Jul 15, 2007 9:42 am

Is it feasible to upgrade my 800 mHz T22 to a 900 or 1.0 G processor? Will the existing CPU fan be OK? I'm quite surprised with what the T22 can do, including watching DVD's and TV, but a bit more power is always welcome!

There is no problem with a 1Ghz upgrade, just use the T22 long fan. You may have that one already, but you'll need to check.

Yes, very easy to do, just take the keyboard off and the heatsink, quarter turn the screw and the processor comes out. Make sure that you reapply heatsink compound to the die surface before putting it back together.

T22 CPU upgrade

#4 Post by Garth » Mon Jul 16, 2007 1:20 pm

Thanks for the information fellas. Now for the hard part - tracking a CPU down! I've got a watch on eBay in the UK but haven't found one yet.

I've been kinda watching/looking for one also. There are some really expensive BIN's, I've let a few bargains slip through my fingers in the past. My only concern is that I don't think I'll see the speed increase with the slower FSB of that CPU that I would like, hence my lack of "really" looking for one. If you get it done, by all means let us know how you like it.

FWIW if you don't know yet, you need to get hold of the Coppermine based core, not the Tualatin based cores used in the T23. You need the one with 256KB L2 (not 512KB) cache and a 100MHz bus.

One was sold on eBay recently (this week?) for £13, so it's not always a prohibitive venture :)

I forget the exact Intel CPU p/n that would help you in your search, I'll check my records and let you know.

SL53S for the 1Ghz and SL58Q for the 900Mhz, perhaps?

Just to let you know that I tracked down a 900 CPU on eBay for £3.00 and it fitted OK (after some help from members of this forum on a related matter). It was a straightforward swap-out.

Now I'm searching for a 1 G CPU.......!

What is the difference, and how can you tell if you already have the "long fan" ?

Thanks!

I don't know what I was thinking when I mentioned 'long fan'. There is only one fan for a T22.

You were thinking about the long fans for the T4x series with high-performance GPUs, where both the CPU and the GPU are cooled. Luckily, things are a good deal simpler in the T2x series.

The mention of a "long fan" has got me doing some research. In the T22 maintenance manual there are 2 fans mentioned:
08K7268 for T22 2647-3xx, 7xx, Bxg
26P9317 for all other T22 models

08K7066 fits a T20 while 04P3448 fits a T21.

My T22 was model 2647-7EG (with 13.3 screen) when originally supplied with the 800 CPU and has (presumably) fan 08K7268. It's now equivalent to a different model with the faster CPU (nearest is model 2647-8Ex which has a 14.1 screen) which was fitted with fan part number 26P9317 when new.

Ebay lists loads of fans for sale for the T series and mostly the sellers don't diffentiate between T20-T23. Also there are several T23 motherboards for sale but the shape and CPU assembly look different to my T22 so I guess that they wouldn't fit in the T22 case without some surgery.

The diagram of the T23 fan assembly in the maintenance manual is clearly different to the T22 as it has a connection for the motherboard (which mine hasn't got, from memory - so I don't know quite how it picks up the power). I guess therefore this wouldn't fit.

So should I be looking for CPU fan part 26P9317? The seller of the 900 CPU has unfortunately also sold the matching fan to someone else, as at the time I wasn't aware that there could be a different fan to mine.

Regards,

Garth
