Prospect of Lenovo
Lenovo is going to have full authority of IBM PC-division including shares and other matters like support and services in the coming years. But it could be sooner than expected as IBM is already busy selling it's part of remaining leftover lenovo shares and maybe also try to get out of the deal before the intended time.
So, once lenovo gains control, there is a slight possibility that it will start imitating all Thinkpads and ThinkCentres into lenovo 3000 notebooks and desktop series respectively (including quality wise). Not to mention how future warranty services would be, as some people are already having problems with IBM warranty now...
So my question is; would you still buy post IBM (fully!) lenovo products when and if they start providing only 3000 family like machines?
P.S. I am not running a poll as I would like to know your precious views in words.

Given that ThinkPads and 3000 series address very different market segments (segments that companies like HP and Dell have separate notebook product lines for); given the recent ThinkPad product development activity (e.g. display roll cage); and given the public focus on the ThinkPad brand, I think it's very unlikely that Lenovo would drop the ThinkPads to focus on the 3000 series.

Yes, I agree that's very unlikely but my point is about making thinkpads quality somewhat similar to 3000 series and not about eliminating them at all.tomh009 wrote:I think it's very unlikely that Lenovo would drop the ThinkPads to focus on the 3000 series.

Effectively that would amount much the same thing -- Lenovo would end up with two brands that have identical systems, and one of them (likely ThinkPad) would not be competitive in its market segment. Similarly, they can't just brand ThinkPads as 3000 series as their costs would be too high.ryengineer wrote:Yes, I agree that's very unlikely but my point is about making thinkpads quality somewhat similar to 3000 series and not about eliminating them at all.tomh009 wrote:I think it's very unlikely that Lenovo would drop the ThinkPads to focus on the 3000 series.
Again, I personally think it unlikely.

This pretty much says it all, having both thinkpads and now a V200 it's like apples and oranges, granted both taste sweet, but they are different flavors.tom wrote:Given that ThinkPads and 3000 series address very different market segments (segments that companies like HP and Dell have separate notebook product lines for); given the recent ThinkPad product development activity (e.g. display roll cage); and given the public focus on the ThinkPad brand, I think it's very unlikely that Lenovo would drop the ThinkPads to focus on the 3000 series

actually they could simply make thinkpads into high end (spec wise) models with build quality of 3000 series. i don't think that this will happen overnight but they might be cutting down on costs more and more.....tomh009 wrote:Given that ThinkPads and 3000 series address very different market segments (segments that companies like HP and Dell have separate notebook product lines for); given the recent ThinkPad product development activity (e.g. display roll cage); and given the public focus on the ThinkPad brand, I think it's very unlikely that Lenovo would drop the ThinkPads to focus on the 3000 series.
