Small hairline crack in T43 LCD

#1 Post by Domain » Mon Jul 16, 2007 11:24 am

There looks to be something like a hair behind the panel down by the clock. It's not big, not really going to obstruct anything, so I'm not going to worry about it if it isn't going to spread and cause a failure.

But if it is, anyone know how much it will cost to fix (I'd love to do it myself, but I don't think I will be that lucky.)?

I have bought used SXGA panels on eBay for as low as $100. A whole assembly runs $130 - $170. Unless you have done it before, replacing just the panel sometimes ends up with a crack worse than yours.

The strange thing is, all the obstructed pixels work. There's not a single dead one behind that crack. I'm seriously wondering if it isn't a crack at all.

I'd take it apart to see if it is a hair, but I'm afraid of damaging the flat panel.

Last year, Solectron had this thing apart, plus an onsite tech, on several occasions. I wonder if this just magically popped up during one of the 28374times this thing was apart. I doubt it, but there was a theory.

Oh, Solectron, there's a hair in my lcd!

If it's a hair, then I doubt that any of the repairs you have had done to the machine would have caused a hair to lodge between the panels of your display. It may have been in there from the factory. Like dsigma6's panel, it may eventually move from its present position.

I tried to pull off the top bezel and tried to see if the hair would shift. No dice, it got a little bit longer. Shame, all the stupid pixels work, I wish I could just replace that one layer that is damaged.

It's not. :( It got longer and the original parts of the crack remained in formation.

It moved! This keeps getting weirder. I wish I could totally get it out of sight though.

That is defiantly debris that is behind the glass. How it got there I don't have the slightest clue. I have had several devices with some type of LCD display and few of them have had dust and dirt get behind the glass. Just tapping it got it to move.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Whatever it is, it has slid back into the abyss where I can no longer see a spec of it.

Color me embarassed for even starting the thread. :)

Actually this thread is quite informative. I had a laptop once with the same problem. Thought it was a crack until it moved. I also had a small bug in the screen of my T23 once.

I wonder how (un)common this is?
