Battery drops from 18 to 4 percent
I have a TP A31 (2652-M5G) which I bought in December 2002. Recently, I recognized that the battery charge suddenly drops from 18 to 4 percents (instead of going constantly down to 3 percent). Therefore, I can’t trust the indicated numbers of charge capacity any more e. g. when doing a presentation. My battery has 62 cycle counts. I regularly reconditioned the battery. Is the battery going bad (already after 17 months)? Do others experience the same problem? Any hints?
Thank you for any answers.

the battery is pretty much telling you it is time to recycle it and get a new one.
The percentage at which it suddenly drops down to nothing will get higher and higher as you continue to use it. If you use your TP mostly connected to AC power, as I do, leave the old battery in there when you know you're not going to need battery power, then swap in the new one in time to charge it up for any trip, and put the old one back in when you return home. Your new battery will last a lot longer that way.

Why bother to insert the old battery and leave it on AC continuously? My understanding is that when you leave a fully charged battery on AC it slowly damages the battery due to heat.Deb Suran wrote:the battery is pretty much telling you it is time to recycle it and get a new one.If you use your TP mostly connected to AC power, as I do, leave the old battery in there when you know you're not going to need battery power, then swap in the new one in time to charge it up for any trip, and put the old one back in when you return home. I always yank the battery out of my A21p once it's fully recharged. The original battery is now more than 3 years old and still holds about 2/3 of maximum charge. The question is often asked if one should disconnect the laptop from the main when not in use. With lithium-ion it does not matter. Once the battery is fully charged, no further charge is applied. It is recommenced, however, to turn the laptop off overnight because of heat harms the battery...
Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)

Weight. Without the battery in place the unit tends to tip over backwards a little too easily. I find the screen most comfortable to view with the screen tilted pretty far back.

OK. That makes sense, although it's not a problem for me, even though the A21p battery runs across the front of the unit. (I have the LCD open just slightly past 90 degrees.) You can also solve the problem with a port replicator or even using a book or wooden block under the back of the unit.Anonymous wrote:Why bother to insert the old battery and leave it on AC continuously? Is there a reset?
I have an older A20 battery, I swear it charges sort of okay, but then I start to use it and BAM, it goes to 2% and I get warnings and everything, but then it continues to run for 1.5 hours.
Is there some reset, either in the battery crossing terminals or something, or in Windows XP? I know there is some logic inside these cells.
