7200rpm drive issues?
7200rpm drive issues?
Has anyone with the 100GB 7200rpm HDD in a T61 experienced excessive heat or vibration from the drive?
I'm debating whether to get that drive or go for the 160GB 5400rpm, which hopefully is not that much slower (tho I haven't seen any average seek time stats)

Hitachi travelstar witch cames with my T61p get very hot and its performances are very poor. Access time was longer then on my Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100 Go in my T41p.
I just buy a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160 Go. It really rocks in silence and stays very cool.

Seagate is a good drive but it is notorious for making marble dropping noises. It might bug you if you work in a quiet environment.Pascal_TTH wrote:I just buy a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160 Go. It really rocks in silence and stays very cool.

I have the 100gb 7200 in my ~3 week old T61.
no problems at all (knock on wood)
I have a Seagate Momentus 120GB 7200.2 in my T60 and it's perfect - very fast, quiet, and cool.
I've been tempted to go for a 200GB 7k200 but at $250 it isn't worth it to me and I'm not sure if I would notice the increase in speed.
I have no marble dropping noises on this drive, but I have experienced that on several Momentus drives in the past, especially the 5400.2 series.

Well, it's true that Seagate hard drives make some strange little noise from time to time. My first Momentus 40 Go 5400 rpm was really boring me. The new 160 Go was also doing so when it was out of the laptop. And I start to worry about because I work in very quiet place and I use tpfancontrol to stop the fan. But, inside my T60p with the rubber pads on both side, I never hear this little noise.ryengineer wrote:Seagate is a good drive but it is notorious for making marble dropping noises.
