I have a T22 with an infra-red port. What is it for?

For transferring files to and from other devices (e.g. another Thinkpad) that also have an infrared port. Just bring the two devices close to each other and a "send files to..." icon automatically pops up on the desktop of your T22.

You may have to enable the infrared (IR) communications port on one or both ends; they may not be turned on by default. For the T22, launch the Thinkpad Configuration Utility. Check the owner's manual for your other device to see how to enable/disable IR.

I've used the port most recently to transfer a video and some pictures from my cell phone to an A31. It's not the fastest thing around, but it's pretty easy to do.

I have also transferred and synced my Dell PDA and my husband's Palm Z22 with my T22 using the IR ports, just be sure they are close to each other and lined up; like Ray said though it is slower than USB. And when you do it for the first time, there is a loud boing sound, I was startled when I heard that, it is the signal that an IR connection has been made

you said the ir port is slower than usb. are you telling me I can use an usb cord to link my laptop to my desktop to transfer files? I've been using a flash drive.

Searching around with Google, there appears to be a way to transfer files between two computers via the USB ports, but it requires a special cable:

I used to have to transfer files from my computer at work to my laptop at home a lot last year, and I also used a flash drive and Briefcase. Create a Briefcase icon on both the PC and the laptop and put the files you are transfering between the two into the Briefcases on both. I carried the files back and forth to work on the flash drive and just had to update the Briefcase, which updated all the files inside of it. Very neat.
