X61 carrying case?

#1 Post by geronimo13 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 4:20 am

Hi!

I'm looking for a carrying case for my 12" laptop. I can only find big bulky cases. Any suggestions?

I had been waiting for IBM/Lenovo to come out with a portfolio-type case that would fit my X60. I gave up and instead went to my local big box store and found a CaseLogic CD holder. It's the kind that looks like a slim three-ring binder that you'd put on a shelf, except there aren't any rings. It holds 4 CDs in a 2-by-2 pattern on each page, with 12 pages. The CD pages were easily removed, and left me with a cover that snugly fits the X60 perfectly (it does fine with both the 4-cell and 8-cell batteries). The dimensions of the outside are 11.5" X 11.5" X 1.5" (29.2cm X 29.2cm X 3.8cm). The zipper goes all the way around the three open sides so everything inside is protected, and when open, it lays totally flat. It seems to be well padded and it's very stiff so I feel it protects my baby just fine. It's easy to use on the subway in tablet mode and, because it looks like a regular binder, helps me be discrete about the fact that there's a computer inside. Highly recommended and only about $15.

Could you post a picture of it? Preferably with your Thinkpad in it. Thanks.

IBM used to make a portfolio for the X series (X20s? X30s?). But i haven't seen on in a while. It was zippered on 3 sides w/ small elastic straps on the inside to hold down the corners of the laptop so you could use it in the case. The zipper had a small red button on the pull, so that it looked like the trackpoint. Of course, it also screamed 'expensive laptop inside'. ;-)

If you don't need to carry much else besides the X, the Booq Powersleeve is very nice (and inexpensive now):

Actually the Apple stores have some very nice bags and briefcases and backpacks. They even fit non-apple tablets (I know some might sneer....).

But many of them look and function really great. Worth checking out.

If you don't need a handle and if you have a 4-cell battery -- not an 8-cell -- then consider the following:
http://booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.25/.f? ... egory=1090
It is a hard but thin clamshell which fits a 4-cell X60/s or X61/s perfectly and provides great protection.

I use the ZeroShock sleeve that can be found at shinza.com. It's an item produced in Japan and that website imports it. I've found it to be perfect for my use and I perfer to put my laptop in my bookbag.

I've read that the 12" model can fit the machine with the large battery installed, and I'm guessing that the 11" model will fit the machine with the standard battery installed (I'm referring to the X61/s not tablet).

Actually even the 8-cell fits, though it's quite snug. I have one of these (as well as the 8-cell).

How timely. I was exchanging emails w/ Shinza.com yesterday. They're working on designing a ZeroShock for the X61 tablet as well. Hopefully the product will make it to market.

I think the 12" model fits the tablet w/ a 4 cell battery. Interior dimensions is only 0.2" shorter in one dimension than the X61 tablet w/ 4 cell, but Shinza's customer service said that tablet should fit it.

Do you use the tablet while in this case? If so, how do you keep it fastened in and not cover up the cooling vent on the side by the zipper?

The 12" ZeroShock cannot fit a X41T with 8-cell battery, and presumably the X61T as well.

The smallest ZeroShock that can fit the 8-cell battery mounted X-series Tablet should be the 14" model.

BTW, AFAIK, the ZeroShock aren't made by Shinza, she's only a distributor, the ZeroShock is from ELECOM.

And no I don't think ELECOM is going to release a more rectangular-shape ZeroShock anytime soon, considering that it's quite a niche product - The market is going widescreen.

Just my 2 cents.

I had been lugging my X60 8-cell in a Waterfield sleeve, in a bigger, bulkier Mandarina Duck bag, which I raved about a year ago. For reasons I can't possibly explain, I really wanted to like the MD bag. However, it just was not durable - zipper kept jamming, strap connection broke in 6 mos - unacceptable. An Italian form over function kind of thing, I guess :( And while the Waterfield sleeve is fantastic in most ways, the Velcro just does not stick anymore. It's only been a year. Disappointed, I was on the prowl for another bag, something that would be durable, and not too huge and useless (the MD bag was a bit that way). After all, I did get an X60 to reduce the weight of my daily baggage!
So my Booq Folee XS came today, two days after I'd ordered it, and I must say I am impressed. It just feels solid without being too bulky. The thing takes my X60 8-cell in it's amply padded compartment, with a bit of room for about a cm of paper/documents, plus all the accessories I need. And then there are more little pockets for accessories I don't yet need. I haven't tried the ultrabase, not optimistic though. I was a little disappointed that it would not carry more documents, but I was looking for a good bag for day-to-day, and I usually don't need to carry much paper anyways. And it's $100 - not the cheapest by any means, but it sure seems well-made and thoughtfully designed - a good value I feel. I can't seem to figure out why the next size up (the XM) is almost twice the price. But this is a good size for me. We'll have to see how it holds up.....

Did you get the 11" or 12" version? What kind of construction is the sleeve? (Hard memory foam or soft neoprene? Waterproof?)

I looked up the X61 and sleeve inner dimensions on TABook and Shinza respectively. It seems that the X61 will fit into the 11". I am seriously considering buying it.

I ordered it from Canada, and I also didn't have to pay any extra duties or taxes on it when it got delivered. Just to let other Canadians know, especially now that the dollar is where its at.

RedGreen,

Thanks for the pictures. After seeing your laptop/bag I will be ordering the same bag. Since my writing skills are poor I have asked the same question twice to see if you can understand what I am looking for...

A.
if worn on your shoulder with strap and the laptop/bag at your side can you have the flap open to see the laptop comfortablly??

B.
With the flap, open and wrapped around other side so the laptop is visable, is the flap flat, or is it bulky and in the way??

Thanks for you input!
11/9/07 ordered X61
3/25/05 purchased M4

RedGreen that looks like a great bag setup. Can I confirm that it's the following:

SleeveCase size 22-16
Horizontal orientation
+ flap
+ strap (did you get the suspension strap?)
+ piggyback

That looks like a premo setup. Very nice. Thanks!

This is the EXACT same bag that I have, except that I opted for the cargo bag with the sleeve that goes in it and the cable guy...it came bundled together for me.

I was in CA on business this week and on the plane and in meetings, I received a ton of compliments. My boss owns a bag that he had custom made from some site (it's popular but I forgot the name) and he wants to change to this bag. He claims the bag he has is made by the same company, but when I looked, there was nothing like it. It's durable, looks good, and holds a lot of stuff. The only thing I wish I did was get the LARGE cargo instead of the medium sized, since I travel quite a bit.
