T22 display

#1 Post by Bilco » Thu Jul 19, 2007 3:02 pm

We've a T22 notebook for 10 years now. I've been planning on replacing the harddrive with something bigger but recently the LCD goes to sleep suddenly. There is no rhyme or reason how quickly this happens. I've tried Fn-F7 to no avail. The hard drive is still running programs but the LCD just shuts down. When it is running, there are no indications of problem with LCD - picture quality is consistent and fine. We've always had battery issues with the machine so I've taken it out but the problem still persists. Any suggestions?

Can you connect an external monitor to see whether that still works? If you point a bright lamp or flashlight at the screen, can you see the screen contents? Is there a pinkish tinge to the display when it first turns on?

If the answers to those questions are "yes", "yes" and "no", you likely need to replace the inverter board. Those are readily available, inexpensive and easy to replace.

The pink tinge ... that would mean a failing backlight, which is much more difficult to replace.

I'm afraid my problem is worse. After playing around I've discovered that the entire machine shuts off abruptly. I believe it might be heat related because if it is turned on after a long period it will run for more than a half hour. I don't know exactly how long because I don't want to risk losing any data. If I put the computer to sleep, it will wake up but eventually it just pops off. Any ideas if this is even worth fixing. My wife wants to buy a Mac so I think it might be a losing battle.

How did you buy a T22 in 1997?

You are correct - I think it was 1999 instead. Sorry about that. Had access to IBM discount on t-60 and passed because the price was slightly less than the MacPro. Boot up times for windows - we are old folks - takes too long, constant updates, etc... plus poor battery life even with 9 cell. In the end I think the wife has won.
