770ED from the grave
770ED from the grave
While moving into a new apartment, I found a 770ED in the attic. I got it to boot after some trial and error. I have 2 sticks of 128 meg memory, but, with them in, I get the BSOD with the error code listed as:
0028:C0004c28 in vxd vmm(01) + 00003c28
On initial bootup, it says that 288000 (give or take a zero) OK. When I tried to test it through the boot +F1 menu, the computer freezes up. Any ideas?
Also, can the system handle XP (if and when I get the new memory to work) without too much slowdown?

Can you test it with one memory module at a time? That will tell you whether one of them is defective.
Windows XP will work fine in 256 MB, but performance will be best if you run it with the Classic theme rather than the XP look.

They're the 100mhz sticks. Is there anything I can tweak to make them more palatable?Neil wrote:Are your 128meg memory sticks 100Mhz? Some have 100Mhz working in 770s, but they like 66Mhz memory much better. I have a 770E with 233Mhz proc and 160meg RAM that I ran XP on for a while. It worked OK, but it was slow.
Re: 770ED from the grave
When you say the system freezes up, how long do you wait? I thought that same thing the first time I went to test my memory. But it literally took more than 40 minutes to complete the test from the F1 set-up menu. Perhaps if you try again and give it some more time? It really is painfully slow and appears to be frozen, but the progress bar did move every 10 minutes or so.sowega wrote:.........On initial bootup, it says that 288000 (give or take a zero) OK. And probably pretty close too. And just to think-back in the day I bought a brand new 770ED right when they were released-it would have been 1998 I believe. The very top model at the time with all the upgrades you could get-including the DVD-ROM drive, which was the first one available in a laptop. I paid $5700 for all of it.pkiff wrote:USD $50-100 working, USD $25-50 for parts. -- plus shipping.sowega wrote:Roughly, what's this laptop worth?

I lost count...
I paid $4.50 plus $20 for shipping for the one I'm using now.sowega wrote:Roughly, what's this laptop worth?

Here's the breakdown of the 770ED:
The type number is 9549 - 5AU.
The hard drive & caddy are intact; it's an 8GB (actuall 7.63) model.
It has a DVDROM drive, but no floppy.
The case, keyboard, and LCD are all in excellent shape, with no missing pieces.
The battery won't charge, but I recently replaced the CMOS battery, so that's a sweet $3 in your pocket.
The AC adapter is new, and powers the laptop with no issues.
I'm also including a DLink network card that fits in the accessory slot.
