T23 + 600X
T23 + 600X
Two very beautiful thinkpads on my desk - my T23 and 600X. I bought these two from Ray, and they are absolutely wonderful ... the 600X esp is a landmark in design, one of the BEST designed thinkpads I have ever seen. The keyboard is pure bliss - if you haven't typed on one, you are missing something!

Congrats on having these exceptional machines, they truly look magnificent, enjoy!

Hmm, I owned three 600/600E's and four T2*'s and somehow I don't miss any of them! I found all of them fairly ugly. They look okay in this photo though.

I've gone through a few 600Es and currently have a 300mhz 600 in my collection and I have to say they are the best built ThinkPads. I can actually pick my ThinkPad 600 up by the wrist pad and not get so much as a creak or flex. I'm afraid of what'd happen if I picked my 15" T42 up by the wrist pad.
The T23 I have is a well built machine but as with all T2x laptops, I'm somewhat disappointed by the various weak points and the keyboard that flexes (mainly an issue on T2x keyboards made in Thailand; the Chinese made T2x keyboards tend to be rock solid). I love the styling of my T23 and the surprisingly snappy performance but I think IBM should have put a little bit more engineering into the system.

I agree 100% ... the only only point I don't like on the T23 is the "spongy" flexing keyboard (esp left side). It runs awesome on W2K though ... if IBM had it made it a li'l more solid, it would have been a truly amazing machine ... strangely, the T22 I had briefly had no flex on the keyboard, it was solid.AlphaKilo470 wrote:The T23 I have is a well built machine but as with all T2x laptops, I'm somewhat disappointed by the various weak points and the keyboard that flexes (mainly an issue on T2x keyboards made in Thailand; the Chinese made T2x keyboards tend to be rock solid). Those are some great looking Thinkpads that you have there gator. I have heard a lot about the legendary 600X series. It looks like I might have to pick one up in the near future and check it out. History has a way of magnifying and distorting things so I would like to be sure. That and the chance to play with any Thinkpad is a wonderful opportunity.

Mike, the legend is true, like I have told Sri, there was a time when I bought every 600series that came up in the marketplace, some were perfect (like the one I got from Pianowiz) some needed some fixing up etc. I was getting them for my friends at work who were constantly begging/asking about a laptop. All tolled I sold about 6 of them this was a couple of yrs ago, and all those machines are still running to this day and do get normal use. Not a single complaint or problem from one person, they are amazing little machines.

Ah, maybe it's Sri's skill in presentation then... There is one small blemish on the 600X now that I see the picture. The front left corner is a little shiny as if something wore away the coating on the bezel.pianowizard wrote:They look okay in this photo though.

Thanks for the comments everyone ... I am really happy to own these machines now. I plan to get an A31p to complete my collection later.
LOL PW, there is indeed some shine in the left front edge, I just hope that the paint does not keep peeling ... Except for the underbelly, every other surface of the 600X has the rubberized finish, gives it such a great look. I have to get a better lookin' HDD cover too later on, the one I have is scratched a bit.
Temetka, you should really get an 600X, I have been on this machine more than the T23 since monday. And I cannot stop typing! I initially wanted to run just linux on it on the 20 GB drive that it came with, but Ray had left the Win2K installtion on it on my request. After I saw how well it ran Win2K, I decided to upgrade the HDD to 40 GB and install a fresh copy of the OS. (I bought a new 60 GB from coolname1 for the T23
). I am going to put the 20GB in the ultraslimbay adapter and dual boot linux
I was actually surprised to see with the screen as well, it is really white (compared to the T23) and bright. I particularly like the form factor, it fits in my bag just perfectly.
One thing I like about the older thinkpads (T30 and earlier) is the way the keyborad is placed all the way to the back of the base. It makes much easier to type and use the trackpoint. I don't know why they changed it from the T4x series ... you can see what I am saying in the "Old v New" thread I started in the offtopic section.
I'll try to see if a group pic this weekend with my T60 too ... if I still had my X31, I would have had a thinkpad in every size!

You know what you should get? A 240X. Much smaller than the X31, and much cuter too. Don't expect to get too much done on it because the screen resolution is only 800x600, but as a collector, you should own one.gator wrote:I'll try to see if a group pic this weekend with my T60 too ... if I still had my X31, I would have had a thinkpad in every size!

gator, A31p was the 1st thinkpad I owned, I was in love with the machine the moment I saw it with the legendary flexview. I am sure you'll adore it as well.
On a sidenote by today's standard many people find it ugly, but not me, it could be nice desktop replacement too.

rye, I don't find it ugly at all. I have seen it only one time, in one of the labs here, and it was partially disassembled. I was impressed by the 3 spindle design, you can use it as a complete desktop replacement even without a docking station. I'd love to own a good A31p someday.ryengineer wrote: On a sidenote by today's standard many people find it ugly, but not me, it could be nice desktop replacement too.

The 600 series were indeed extremely well built, though I did manage to break the case of one (don't ask me how). The keyboard was really incredible, you could hammer on them like Beethoven and it would not yield a millimeter. Maybe we should petition Lenovo to redesign one with modern innards, I bet a lot of forum members would kill for one
Well, now I feel bad. My 600x is on its third screen, (last replaced 16 months ago just before the warrany expired), and it's SO dim it's un-usable. What's the secret of these 5-year-old screens that are still bright? Where can I get one?
I really liked my 600x, it was my first ThinPad, actually my first laptop, so I was spoiled. I gave it to a friend, he's used it for the past 16 months, and he likes it also. He's using an external monitor right now.
Any help for mine? I'd like to get it back home!

Nice machines, gator.
The 600X is sooooo sexy. As you said, one of the better keyboards in this universe. You could type all day long (and/or all night long
My prefered machine : not to heavy, not to small, you have all you need, and very solid. After 7 year, mine is like new, nothing moves.

you keep yr machines in nice shape: no dust, no cookie crumbs, no cat hair....

huzzah say I (current owner: thanks, gator:-)
onboard we have 600e and t22: tho the 600e's keyboard is superior, I find myself using the t22 most of the
time. Two reasons: better screen (SXGA+), and *nix is loaded.
