Which THinkpad should I buy??

#1 Post by controlit » Wed Oct 20, 2004 8:56 pm

Hi Everyone,

Great forum! So glad I discovered it.

I currently am using a T22 and it has been flawless since I got it 2 or 3 years ago.

I am planning to give this one to my daughter and get a new Thinkpad.

I don;t travel much so it does not have to be an ultralight...

I was looking at a T42 with a 15" screen, 64 mg video card, 60 gig hd..

Do you all think this is the model to get?

Budget is not my main concern but of course dont want to waste money.

I mostly use the laptop for Internet access and Office. But I am a speed freak...

ANy comments appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Mark

Depends what exactly you're going to use that laptop for. A 1.7GHz is more than enough for everything you can throw at it, barring extreme applications. 64MB Radeon 9600 is awesome. The 15" is beautiful, whereas the 14.1" is great too with about 1.1lb of weight saving and a smaller footprint.

It's all up to you. Don't forget to get yourself some RAM from Crucial! :)

Thanks for the response.

So, it seems like the decision is pretty simple....between the 14" and 15"...

I don;t even know what my T22 has for a processor but it is fine, is the T42 lighter?

I really use the computer to surf the web.,.,.,I am on many hours a day...

Would you get the 15?

Where should I buy this anyway? I was ready to order it from ibm...

Is it better to buy direct?

512mg of ram fer sure...

Thanks again!

Well, it seems I am not the first person to ask this question...duh!

Found a thread that covers the differences between 14 and 15 very well..

I will suggest the Thinkpad T42p 2373 KXM or 2373 Q1U with 15" UXGA LCD. It very nice system to get. what i really liked about these model is that they have nice video card and Intel P Mobile processor. which runs at good speed even you use it on battry.

If you are going to carry it around much, then I recommend the 14.1" screen--it is plenty large and you will have a laptop that weighs under 5 pounds rather than one that weighs just over 6.

I bought mine with the 60meg 7200rpm drive, and I am very happy that I did.
