Bluetooth: No services found

#1 Post by Davidhs » Sun Jul 22, 2007 6:21 pm

I posted this question on the Z series forum, but perhaps it is more of a software issue than Z series hardware, so please allow me to ask here as well. I will close one or other thread if an answer appears on one of these threads.

I am unable to connect a Bluetooth GPS logger to my Z60m running XP Home SP2 and I should appreciate some help.

This device works fine with my Palm TX via Bluetooth.
My Z60m works fine via BT with my Nokia mobile phone.
So BT is working to at least some extent on both the GPS box and my Thinkpad.

Is my BT set up correctly on the Z60m?
Device Mgr shows:
Bluetooth devices
- Bluetooth bus enumerator, which shows Broadcom driver 5.1.0.3100 dated27 Feb 07, and
- Thinkpad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate, showing driver Broadcom 5.1.0.2900 dated 19 Dec 06.

That duplication and version discrepancy strikes me as odd and hence my query.
I have just run update driver using the downloaded file 7jba08ww, which provides the 5.1.0.3100 update. I ran it against the second item listed above, the TP BT EDR device, but that still reports the earlier version. Why is that?

The symptoms are:
- the GPS device is visible in My BT places
- it can be paired
- but no services are detected either in the configure a new device wizard, nor when double clicking on the icon from within my BT places.

I also notice that I have two Bluetooth icons at bottom right of the screen:
- the normal bluetooth icon, providing acces to my BT places, cofig, etc
- and another icon that says a BT device is off.
The BT indicator light bottom centre of the screen is on.

As I said, this little GPS device connects fine with my Palm.

Anyone have any suggestions, please?
Thanks,
David H-S

Please, is there anyone there who is able to comment on my bluetooth configuration as described in my first post?
The problem is why won't my TP make a serial Bluetooth connection to my little GPS logger.
I should appreciate any help.
Thanks,
David H-S

Do you have a Bluetooth GPS service installed on your ThinkPad (or whatever other "service" the GPS device may need to exchange information with the ThinkPad)?

If there is no suitable service on the matching device, then you may establish connectivity but you will be unable to do anything with it.

Bluetooth: No services found

I apologise to Bill Bolton for the delay in responding to his reply; other things have taken time this week.
Bill asks:
Do you have a Bluetooth GPS service installed on your ThinkPad
I am not at all convinced that my Bluetooth setup is correct. Part of the problem is I am not sure what things should look like and there is a dearth of good diagnostic guidance. Or I have not found it so far.

1. I have Bluetooth installed and during this week I have reinstalled both the Enhanced Data rate firmware (2.1.211.299) and removed and reinstalled the BT Enh Data Rate sw (5.1.0.3100). Is there anyting else I should have installed as well?
2. Device Mgr shows the BT Bus enumerator at 5.1.0.3100 and the TP BT with Enh Data rate at 5.1.0.2900. As I said before, the latter figure puzzles me as the update is supposed to provide 5.1.0.3100.
3. BT Configuration seems to my untutored eye to be reasonable. The Local services tab shows a BT Serial port set to COM5; the Client Applications tab lists BT serial port.
4. Explore My BT Places lists both my mobile phone and this GPS logger - BlueGPS BD8706. The latter has a red tick and a blue question mark. I don't know where it gets "BlueGPS BD8706" from; whether from some bit of communication with the device or from the RoyalTek software I have installed - see point 9 below. Underneath the title is displayed:
"Unknown: Major(31), Minor(0)" which suggests it has not discovered much about it.
5. Right click / Properties shows one or two tabs depending on whther it is paired or not (I think). A device address is listed on the General tab. The Authorization tab lists services. I have tried ticking either just BT serial port or the whole list, then Apply. That makes no difference. If the device is unpaired then paired again, all those ticks disappear.
6. I am asked for a security code on pairing I and enter 0000 as per the device manual.
7. Right click offers unpair, so I presume it is paired. If I unpair and then pair and then connect I get:
"The Serial Port connection failed: Unknown port"
8. If I right click and select Discover Available services I get "Not Connected". So I double click to connect - and then I am back with Unknown port. I have also received "No services found" on a previous test.
9. Royaltek supply a piece of software for controlling GPS functions and getting the log data from the device. If I ask that to connect on COM5, I get "Failed to set up a connection." Not very helpful.

7. I can do Obex file transfer via BT with my phone - that works well. I have not tried any of the other offered services for the phone. I note that a COM1 service is shown on the display services for the phone, but it doesn't do anything (I have a fairly basic phone).

So I am stuck. When Bill asks if I have the right services, the answer is I hope. Does the above answer that question?

Any guidance or pointers to good write-ups will be much appreciated!
Thanks,
David H-S

That is normal.... you'd need to ask Broadcom about why the Widcomm version numbering like that.

Apart from that, the only thing I can suggest is doing a Google search on something like "Bluetooth GPS" and reading through a lot of the matches to see what information comes up... its tedious but often the only way to get a handle on Bluetooth related issues.

Cheers,

Bill B.
