600e complete setup
I bought a thinkpad 600e for a buck at a garage sale, and would like to get it running,It is 400mhz and 97mb ram,the battery is junk also......I replaced the hd because it was junk I have a brand new hd, a floppy drive and a brand new cd drive. I would like to know how to set it up from scratch. like i said the hd is brand new and I dont know much about dos? I have boot disks and os cds for just about any windows os and would like help on how to install the os from scratch....I know I have to format the hd and use a bootdisk but not sure how to partition and all that .....I have been in bios and everything checks fine no error codes so I think I should be able to get it working any help would be great
There are lots of guides for this online, and on this forum. Such as this one.

What OS are you doing to install? I would recommend using Windows 2000 or Windows XP since it has most of the drivers you need. The only two you need to download would be the trackpoint driver (to enable the center button) and the Thinkpad Configuation utility.
Installing an OS is simple Insert you install CD and follow the prompts. It will find out what needs to be done to the hard drive and ask you how you want to partition it. Windows 95/98/ME use FAT32 which has a limit of 32GB (supposedly) Windows NT4/2000/XP use FAT32 and NTFS (no capacity limit). After the initial setup is complete, there will be a second install phase in which you will need to input your product key, set region, time, time zone, etc, and some other stuff (depends on the OS being installed). Then you will have one final reboot and you will have a working OS. Next you will want to install additional drivers and reboot. Then you can install software and copy files over.

I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Just a clarification, since dankchief hasn't said how large their new hard drive is yet. FAT32 does not have a 32GB limit under Windows 98/ME -- it only has a 32GB limit if you try to format a disk in FAT32 under XP: XP imposes its own arbitrary 32GB limit on FAT32 drives. Regardless of which format you use, you will have a limit of 120GB (or 128GB?) for any single partition on a drive in your Thinkpad 600E -- this is a BIOS limitation of the 600E model.Stargate199 wrote:Windows 95/98/ME use FAT32 which has a limit of 32GB (supposedly) Windows NT4/2000/XP use FAT32 and NTFS (no capacity limit).

Really
Really my opinoun is that you should go with Windows 2000, im running windows 2000 prof. on my 600 and it runs so great and would probably run so much better on a 600E.

If you know the CD is bootable (Win2K and later are for sure - I think Win98 is too, but I'm not sure)... (try it in another machine to be sure), and the CD drive is working properly...
Go into EZ Setup by holding F1 when you turn the machine on. Clear the boot order or specify that CD boots before the hard drive. The 600E will boot from CD.

whizkid and Stargate199 are just trying to help. It may seem to you like your problem is obvious, but I can assure you that for us, it is still difficult to figure out exactly what is going on. You are getting good advice here, for free, so I would encourage you to be patient with the folks who are helping you.dankchief wrote:I just dont get it...it is starting to make me mad
It would be a useful first step if you answered this question.Stargate199 wrote:What OS are you doing to install?

Have you tried to go into EZ Setup yet? If you are having problems booting, then you will need to go in and verify that your boot order is set correctly as whizkid suggests.whizkid wrote:Did you change the boot device order?

Under DOS CDR101 usually refers to bad driver or faulty hardware.
Theoretically, the CD drive should be ATAPI so if you have a bootable Install CD it should just boot - Not all Win98 CD's are bootable - if the CD is bootable and it doesn't boot it sounds like a motherboard or CD drive issue - have you run the EZ setup onboard diagnostics?

Hey
I had the same problem, when i had bought my 600 it came with an OS that had a password and i tried to use one of those programs to remove the password, but it wouldnt read it and would give me that floppy drive pointing down with F1. Turned out i had a faulty cdrom so i got it and the OS fixed.
Are you sure the drive you bought isnt faulty?

I have been in the ez setup.....dont know the order, but have had it in every possible order.....I have all windows os cds, anyone would be fine......the cd drives work....I downloaded the drivers off of lenovo site and it rec. both drives,I have gotten pretty far w/ win98 but it says it is missing cab. files? I didnt mean to be a jerk, I was just saying I am getting mad, not for not getting help but this darn comp. I have bought a new hd and cd drive, read millions of articles, so my brain is just kindof friedpkiff wrote:whizkid and Stargate199 are just trying to help. I've seen that happen with some OEM versions. There are files intentionally missing from the CD. They usually came on a floppy with the original machine. Those CD's are not usually bootable, in my experience.dankchief wrote:[I have gotten pretty far w/ win98 but it says it is missing cab. files?

OK. In that case, I would put the start-up sequence back to the usual default order and leave it there unless you need to do something specific.dankchief wrote:I have been in the ez setup.....dont know the order, but have had it in every possible order.....
The default boot order is:
Floppy A (or FDD 1?)
CD
HDD 1
OK. Given what whizkid says about the missing cab files, then I would recommend following Atlas64's advice and trying to install Windows 2000.dankchief wrote:I have all windows os cds, anyone would be fine
No problem. We all know what that is like!dankchief wrote:I was just saying I am getting mad, not for not getting help but this darn comp.[....]so my brain is just kindof fried
Problem booting from CD:
If your boot order is set correctly and you still can't boot from the Windows 2000 CD, then it might be a problem with the CD or with the CD drive. For instance, if you are using a burned Windows 2000 CD, then your CD drive might not be able to boot from it, even though the CD is bootable. Maybe your Win 98 CD is scratched and/or otherwise corrupt? Likewise any of your other OS CDs. You say you got a new CD drive, what model do you have? And you are using it from the UltraslimBay slot right? (not from USB, or whatever).
Your new hard drive:
When I'm installing a new OS, I personally prefer to clean the hard drive first, and then partition it using DOS FDISK, and then perform the install on a freshly partitioned drive. You said you got a new hard drive. Was it brand new or was it used? If used, have you cleaned out all remaining detritus from the previous owner and returned it to being blank?

Did you partition the drive while it was installed in your Thinkpad or did you use another computer? You should partition the drive using your 600E.dankchief wrote:yes it is brand new...and it was partitioned using fdisk
Just to clarify then, your Thinkpad CAN BOOT from the Windows 98SE CD, but when you try to install you get some kind of failure/error?dankchief wrote:I can not get past missing cab. files, and the only cd that will boot is win. 98 se...
I don't know this error.dankchief wrote:and even then sometimes I get the cdr101 error.....?.
I don't understand you here.dankchief wrote:but I am pretty sure you need 98 original cd first......
Are your other CD's burned CD's or originals? A quick google indicates that some people with your Toshiba drive have had trouble booting from multisession CDRs.dankchief wrote:I dont know why I cant boot w/ the other cds?
Since you're having all this CD trouble, my next suggestion would be to get you to run your install from your hard drive instead. To do this, you need to format your drive and make it bootable, then copy the relevant files from the OS CD over to the drive, then take the OS CD out of the drive and run setup from the hard drive only.
But if your CDs are corrupt/missing files, then this won't work either, since you will be missing the files on you hard drive as well.
