T21- how does a PCMCIA port convert usb1.0 to USB2.0 ?

#1 Post by IamtherforeIthinkpad » Sun Jul 22, 2007 8:57 pm

I am not sure I have actually read that this is a fact.
Does a PCMCIA card in a T21 or T22 now generate 2.0 Speeds.
How is this possible ?
Thanks

Yep, a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card will run at USB 2.0 speeds. PCMCIA cards operate on the same setup as desktop PCI cards. The USB 2.0 PCMCIA cards provide the USB 2.0 chipset and ports just like their desktop counterparts. They communicate with the system over the PCI bus and provide USB 2.0 speeds to a system that originally didn't have a USB 2.0 chipset. I have one that I use with my T23 and it works just fine, nice and fast. :)

The Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA card that I use, has 2 ports and includes an external power supply for unpowered devices like flash drives. Mine works great also! See my sig for details.

You still have the internal USB 1 port to use and it is powered.

Question about powered USB 2.0

#4 Post by IamtherforeIthinkpad » Mon Jul 23, 2007 8:17 pm

Please pardon my ignorance on this topic, but , what is the value of having a powered USB card,
what is the advantage of having a powered port.?

What devices do NOT require a powered port?

Also, I am assuming then that typical USB PCMICA cards are NOT powered , Yes?

USB Printers (a/c) & cameras (batteries) usually have their own power and do not need the USB host port to supply power. Flash drives are not powered and need power to be supplied by the host USB port. I also have a 2-1/2" laptop hard disk drive in a USB external enclosure that does not have its own power supply and also needs to get power from the host USB port.

i have pcmcia with usb 2.0 in my t23 model with wifi and xp (from factory)

max speed on usb 2.0 is 16MB/sec. PCMCiA don't have power to supply energy for external devices like usb hard drive etc.

but work great with cameras etc.

Speaking of external power to the USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus,

Here's what i've done on my t23 : I took an old USB cable , cut the "B" plug and instead i soldered an 1.3mm dc jack on the black and red (tip positive) wire (5 volts supply).

Purpose : if i need more power out of the USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus, i plug my modified usb cable to the onboard USB 1.0 on the t23 and the dc jack on the CardBus, now i have the extra power needed for unpowered devices without the need for an external power adapter.

Of course i'm limited to what the t23 can supply via USB 1.0 ports.

My off-brand four port powered ($10) adapter uses a USB port for
the powered part. No problem running anything. I rarely use the
power as my wifi cards are low power use Sandisk. I do need the
extra power to work high speed 4GB & higher flash stick drives. Otherwise, I am stuck with USB 1.0 speed.
