My new home-made keychain and bookmark! (PIC)

#1 Post by gator » Mon Jul 23, 2007 1:20 am

I found a couple of OLD RAM chips (4 MB EDO made by Micron) that someone here was throwing away. I made a new keychain by breaking on of 'em into two peices and filing the broken edge ... I thought I had to drill a hole for the keyring, it had a proper "hole" for the ring at the other end!

Here is are some pics: (click for a bigger version)

How do they look? People with interesting keychains, start posting pics!

One of the guys that owns a small computer place in town has been selling these for $5 over the past year. I can't believe that some people have paid that much for these.... ;-)

Gator that is really awesome!

I don't have a picture but I have a lenovo flash drive that comes with a cap with a round hole in it and thus I'm using it as a key-chain.

Temetka, it is an excellent book ... The autho Dr. Supriyo Datta is from Purdue and is considered one of best experts on nanoscale transistors. This book gives a totally bottom-up approach (i.e building transitiors atom by atom!) to transistor design, a fantastic read ... however it is not for the faint hearted, you need some background in making quantum mechanics to grasp it fully ...

I have one "keychain" stick left, so if anyone wants it, PM me and I'll be happy to send it across.

Re: Keychain

#10 Post by schen » Mon Jul 23, 2007 4:47 pm

I was using an old stick of 30 pin SIMM for a keychain, but decided that it was too long, so I dug around and found a small SO-DIMM to use instead. I figured the prospect of me using a 16Mb chip in anything was pretty small, so I decided to use it.

I know; it marks me as a real geek, but that's ok. I do need to take a file to the corners to round them a little though.

I specifically went for a desktop RAM because the SO-DIMM is thin compared to the other ...

That's the reason I went with that. I really prefer my keys to be as small as possible so the SO-DIMM was great. I spend half my day in either windpants or coaching shorts, so you don't really want a big wad of something poking out of that mesh material!

Gator, if you still have the keychain RAM stick left, I want it!! Hey, I have been reading and trying to grasp quantum physics for over 10 years - it ain't easy  So the author is from Purdue Univ? I have a teeny degree from Purdue in entomology (now try not to be too impressed  )

I'm with Ray, go into the future and get us Lotto numbers for the big 25 million dollar lotteries, and we can all get together and buy Lenovo.

I just used a 30-pin SIMM, and it worked fine.

As promised from earlier today (well, yesterday), here's my keychain entry:

Image (112KB)

The one on the top. It's some sort of SRAM (not SDRAM) DIMM. Eight 32K x 8 (not 32M, 32K) so it's a 32K x 64. In any event, as a size comparison I've put a standard 144-pin SODIMM below it. One advantage that this module has is that since it's composed of the eight SRAM dual-in line (DIP) packages, that means that there's pins sticking out the back side. While this may not be too comfortable inside one's pocket, it does have one advantage:

Image (112KB)

It sticks to the cloth surfaces that cover most office cubicles. I stuck it up on my overhead shelf and it stayed there until I went home.

Those are some great and creative uses of antiquated computer parts... :D

The only really unique keyring I have is a handcrafted and turned rosewood keyring that's not on my keys at the moment. I'll try and find it and post a pic, but it's just a simple hourglass shaped piece of timber.

I was lucky that the processor was not completely made out of a sort of ceramic material

Actually, IIRC, the last ceramic-packaged Intel chip was the Pentium II Overdrive, which was very, VERY rare. Last in the actual Pentium Pro family was the 200MHz with 512k cache, IIRC. Last in the Pentium family was the 200MHz non-MMX.
