R40 or T40?

#1 Post by Terrahawk » Mon Jul 23, 2007 10:30 pm

Hi everyone,

I have obtained a T40 rather cheaply and I was wondering whether I should keep that instead of my R40, which I have here now. The only major disadvantage is that the R40 has a six month old battery with most of its life left, whereas the T40's battery si down to 1/3 its design capacity.

I'm just after an opinion - I'd most likely swap my 1.7 GHz processor and the hard drive and RAM over if I did keep the T40, so differences in specification don't matter too much.

The performance between the two should be nearly identical (with same CPU, etc).

Assuming both are in similar operational and cosmetic shape and both out of warranty, the only reasons to keep the T40 are 1) weight, 2) design, 3) status of owning a T vs. R series, 4) a new project/learn about another model.

T40's generally sell at a premium over R40's, so you can make a little more money now.

I had several R40 (Pentium M) models and liked them quite a bit. The standard 8-cell battery with a long battery life was a bonus for me.

I decided to keep my R40 since its battery is only 6 months old and I get 6 hours on it, compared to the T40's battery where I only get 1. Also, I prefer the port layout on the R40, with the VGA, LAN and one USB port on the back.

I will miss the 400g or thereabouts less weight and the decidedly more solid feel compared to the R40 but yeah as you said, performance was pretty much identical between the two.
