Upgrade to Wireless N

#1 Post by mpvincent » Mon Jul 23, 2007 11:45 pm

Hi there,

I am wanting to upgrade my Z61t to wireless N. Am I right in thinking I could just take out the mini pc express intel ABG I have and put in something like an Intel 4965AGN and install drivers?

Thanks

Mike.

To actually get MIMO (which is what you need for additional bandwidth), you would need to add antennas as well.

Right. To benefit from 802.11N you need 3rd internal antenna, otherwise its waste of money.

I dont think that you can simply add 3rd antenna if notebook chassis is not factory ready for it - it would mean to disassembly LCD and main chassis too to interlace antenna wire throught notebook and LCD cover to antenna and you need space in LCD cover designed for 3rd antenna...

i think it's a either or situation with the Z61t on the 3rd antenna / wwan antenna.
the 3rd antenna is selling for 55 dollars on my z61m (not cheap at all)
look up the LCD part of the hmm for more details.

i think the N card also improves the range. so just changing the card to N will improve reception and range but you won't be utilizing the full speed / potential of the card.
atheros chip is much better than the intel one but also produces more heat and consumes more power.
