T20 White Screen

#1 Post by MimoG3 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 10:00 pm

Hello i have a Thinkpad T20, 750 MHz with 20 GB HD and 512 MB of Memory, when i was using it last night the screen just suddenly changed from a picture to a blank white color, it stays that way no matter what, even if i turn off the computer and turn it back on, this lcd that i put in there is different that the one that came with it due to the last one being cracked.

What's the part number of the LCD that you put in there?

Most likely you have a problem in the video ribbon cable. Or the video signals on the motherboard are not getting out to the panel. If the panel is lit, that means the inverter and backlight are working. If there is no picture on the LCD and an external monitor works properly, then check the ribbon cable to see if it's firmly plugged into the motherboard, inspect the length of the ribbon cable for cracks or tears and make sure the end of the cable is firmly inserted into the back of the panel.

ya i dont get a signal to the panel but an external monitor works, i dont think the cable got messed up but i was thinking that at first, i have been using this laptop for 2 years so that could be the problem im really not sure. the first lcd that i had in there got cracked by someone, then i had this lcd from an HP omnibook and its been working untill now.

If you previously replaced the LCD, then the "glued/taped" attachment that holds the LCD cable to the back of the LCD might have worked itself loose, causing the cable to come loose. I would definately try looking at that.

Was it seated all the way?

With the LCD removed from the casing, you can set the LCD against the back and plug the cable back in, and of course reconnect the inverter, and see if it works. If not, then it might just be the LCD panel.

i made sure everything was seated corectly, i kept taking it out and putting it back in, and i believe i killed the inverter today trying to mess around with a different panel, because when i turn on the laptop with the inverter in, it starts to spark inside with the tape over it.
