DirectX and error message

I'm trying to install a decent game (for fun) on my X60 C2D,1.5Ghz, but I get the error message "(Render) Unable to initialize D3D on your system. You need to update to DirectX8.1 or later, and make sure that your video card supports hadware transofrmaiton and lighting!" BTW, they use the exclamation point, not me.

Any suggestions. I tried upgrading to a higher directX, but no luck.
