advantages of faster CPU (heat/power)

#1 Post by skanky » Fri Oct 22, 2004 2:25 am

is there any advantage from upgrading my T40 2373 from a P4M 1.3ghz to a P4M 1.7ghz in terms of heat output and power usage etc?

will my battery last longer or shorter with an upgrade like this?

In most applications, the 1.7 will not provide a significant difference from the 1.3 (exceptions are, of course, CPU-intensive computational software - iterative optimization algorithms, 3D rendering, etc) You might see a 30% improvement in speed on these. The 1.7 MHz processor also has twice the full speed cache of the 1.3 (providing the 1.7 is a Dothan) so this might boost things a little bit more. I have a 1.5Mhz and 1.6MHz Banias T4x and a 1.7MHz Dothan T4x. Don't see any speed difference between any of them. You might begin to see significant differences at 2.0/2.1MHz but you'll need to wait for prices to come down.

Heat shouldn't be a problem as the 1.7MHz Dothan shouldn't put out any more heat than the 1.3MHz Banias. For the same reason, battery life shouldn't be any less.

i just want to be sure but a "SL7EP" is a 1.7 dothan chip? and there'll be no problem replacing my 1.3 banias chip out of my T40?

thanks.

Yes, the 1.7 a Dothan:

The 1.3 is a Banias

As you can see the 1.7 has a lower thermal dissipation (heat generation) than the 1.3. It's a straight swap but I expect your T series is an older one an will probably need the latest BIOS and Embeded Controller update first.
