A31 Display Problem - Lines and Squares - Picture Attached

#1 Post by imulic » Fri Oct 22, 2004 3:29 am

I`m using A31 2652M5G Thinkpad, I have a problem with display you can see on photo attached.

When I turn thinkpad on, I get some red rectangles on screen on bios window, afther that, I get vertical color lines on booting windows 2000 Sp4, afther that you can see on picture.

Can anybody tell me what to do?

Hi, you could try uninstalling and then reinstalling the video
driver, but that looks like a failing vga.

I remember now what I have done. I installed new Omega Drivers for ATI and I was using them about a month, after that I get the problem in rising from hibernation. My display resolution is back to 1400x1050 but with pixel radius for 640x480, so desktop was streched. To fix this I needed to click the switch on display.

I uninstalled Omega Drivers and rollback original ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 drivers. But the same thing.

Sometimes after about one day of inactivity display is OK, but after one restart problem is still there.

Thanks Steven on your post.

Can it be a cooler of VGA?!

I would guess it is a problem with your video memory. Unfornately, I do not know of any tool to stress test it, but maybe somebody else can help?
You said that your problem sometimes disappears after you give it some rest. What happens if you completely remove current from the system by removing the battery as well as the power adaptor, and then start it up again after a couple of seconds to discharge the capacitors?
It does not have anything to do with your drivers or your software since you can see your problem already in the BIOS screen.

I installed Omega drivers and got the almost similar problem like yours.

The screen resolution get squeezed.

You can fix it by going to the BIOS and use the default setting.

It will fix your problem.

As for the red thing rectangular, I have no clue. I think you can uninstall omega drivers and apply the BIOS default like I said and reinstall the driver from IBM site.

I myself use the current driver from omega without any problem. I did have problem with the older driver.

If you want, you can always try the current driver, however, if you are afraid then you can use the current driver from IBM.

For A31p, there will be slight different only in term of performance if you use omega.

please let me know if you able to fix it using my method.

Moroner is right.
If you see diplay corruption on the POST screen, the problem isn't caused by drivers, etc.
It could be a heat issue.
I use an Antec Notebook Cooler with both my TP's.
And since both were used machines, I disassembled and cleaned them.
I've used Omega drivers for my racing/gaming machine for quite a while, but not on the A31P yet.
Included with the Omega drivers is a utility to test VGA RAM.
Also Omega has another utility to completely clean old drivers from Windoze.
I would try Moroner's and stingbandel's suggestions, and maybe mine too, before considering the most likely cause.
Display corruption is usually caused by failing or defective VGA RAM.

Have you tried attaching notebook to an external monitor to see if you get the same results. If you do, then it is something with your video card or drivers, if everything is OK, then you have a display problem. Could be inverter, LCD cable as I've seen some wierd stuff when they go bad but still produce a display.

Intresting problem...

When I enter BIOS, picture on display was OK, I set the Display Expansion to OFF. Restarted. Everything is OK NOW.

After I turn Expansion again ON and for now is OK.

Thanks on your help.
